Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi, known as Menlu Sugiono, held a significant meeting with Riyad Mansour, the Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations, on October 10, 2023. During this meeting, Minister Retno reiterated Indonesia’s strong commitment to supporting peace initiatives in Palestine.

The discussion took place in New York, where both officials explored the ongoing challenges facing the Palestinian people. Indonesia, as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement and a proponent of global peace, has consistently advocated for the rights of Palestinians. Minister Retno emphasized that Indonesia stands firmly behind the quest for a two-state solution, which aims to establish an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Mansour expressed gratitude for Indonesia’s unwavering support. He highlighted the importance of international solidarity in addressing the humanitarian and political crises in Palestine. The meeting also addressed the need for continued diplomatic efforts to renew peace talks, which have stalled in recent years.

Indonesia’s support for Palestine is not new. The country has a long history of advocating for Palestinian independence, dating back to its own struggle for sovereignty. The government often raises this issue at various international forums, including the UN General Assembly and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Both leaders acknowledged the significance of maintaining dialogue and cooperation among nations to promote peace and security in the region. The Indonesian Foreign Minister affirmed that her country will continue to work closely with global partners to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

As the situation in Palestine remains precarious, Indonesia’s proactive stance is seen as a beacon of hope for many. The country has pledged to provide humanitarian assistance and support developmental projects in Palestinian territories, reinforcing its commitment to the welfare of the Palestinian people.

The meeting between Minister Retno and Mansour underscores the ongoing relevance of international diplomacy in addressing complex geopolitical issues. With Indonesia’s backing and the support of other nations, there is a renewed optimism for progress toward achieving lasting peace in the region.
