Lewisburg Celebrates 15 Years as America’s Coolest Small Town

The city of Lewisburg, West Virginia, is marking a significant milestone as it celebrates 15 years since being named America’s coolest small town. This accolade, awarded in 2011, has continued to bolster the city’s reputation as a prime tourist destination, attracting visitors from across the region and beyond.

The recognition has had a lasting impact on Lewisburg, according to local officials. Kara D. Dense, President and CEO of Experience Greenbrier Valley, reflected on the significance of the honor, stating, “This type of publicity, you just can’t buy it with money… for someone to do an article and say that you are the coolest small town, it’ll get us a ton of attention.”

Visitor numbers have indeed increased over the years, reinforcing Lewisburg’s status as a vibrant spot for tourism. Valerie Pritt, Director of Public Relations for Experience Greenbrier Valley, noted that many tourists mention seeing the signage proclaiming the town as “America’s coolest small town” before deciding to stop. “We got off the interstate specifically because we saw the sign… and we had to see what that was about,” she explained.

Lewisburg offers a range of attractions, including diverse dining options and outdoor recreational activities. Additionally, nearby sites such as The Greenbrier resort and the Monongahela National Forest provide visitors with ample opportunities for exploration.

Yet, it is the community spirit that truly defines Lewisburg. Mayor Beverly White emphasized the importance of the town’s residents, stating, “[It’s] her people. We are welcoming. In 2021, we were named the most inclusive city in the state of West Virginia, and for me that says it all.” White expressed gratitude towards the community members who contribute to the town’s charm and vitality.

The collective efforts of local businesses and residents have fostered a strong sense of belonging and pride in Lewisburg. White continued, “I’m just grateful for everybody that does their part. Our business owners, our restaurant facilities, just everybody working together to make sure that Lewisburg stays the beautiful and wonderful city that it is.”

The recognition of Lewisburg is not just a fleeting honor but a testament to the community’s dedication over the past 15 years. Pritt noted, “We have such a great community here that is so passionate about the community, about Lewisburg. They love it, and so they want to be able to showcase it.”
