Madison County Lights Up for Veterans During Operation Green Light
Madison County will illuminate the Madison County Courthouse in green from November 4 to November 11 as part of Operation Green Light, an initiative aimed at supporting military veterans. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the county has participated in this nationwide campaign, which raises awareness of the challenges veterans face and highlights available resources.
Operation Green Light, first launched in 2021, is a collaborative effort by the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC), the New York State County Executives’ Association, and the New York State County Veteran Service Officers’ Association. In 2022, the campaign expanded nationally under the direction of the National Association of Counties (NACo).
James J. Cunningham, Chairman of the Madison County Board, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Operation Green Light is just one small way we can show our veterans how much we appreciate the sacrifices they made for our safety and security.” He added, “Thank you, Madison County wants you to know that your service mattered, and we are grateful.”
In addition to the courthouse lighting, Madison County encourages local municipalities, businesses, and residents to participate by changing at least one lightbulb to green. This can be an exterior light visible to the community or an interior light that may prompt discussions about veteran support. Residents are also urged to reach out to veterans they know to offer assistance, whether it be a ride to an appointment or simply a friendly conversation.
The initiative aims to foster a sense of community for veterans, reinforcing that they are seen, appreciated, and supported. While the campaign is centered around the week of Veterans Day, participants are encouraged to maintain this support year-round. Those interested can share their involvement on social media with the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
Ron Raymer, Director of the Madison County Veterans Service Agency and a veteran himself, remarked, “Operation Green Light is a great initiative and opportunity to send a strong and highly visible message to both the veteran community and active-duty service members alike who may call Madison County home.” He highlighted the importance of providing a network of services designed to assist veterans on their journey home.
For veterans in need of support or information about available benefits, the Madison County Veterans Service Agency can be reached at (315) 366-2395 or through their website at www.madisoncounty.ny.gov. The agency offers assistance in connecting veterans with federal, state, and local resources.
