The community of Medora, North Dakota, came alive this past weekend as it celebrated the 30th annual Old Fashioned Cowboy Christmas. Despite the typically quiet winter months, the town drew crowds eager to partake in festive activities while snow blanketed the scenic badlands.

Local businesses, many of which close for the season, opened their doors to participate in “Eats on the Streets.” This event featured a variety of snacks offered to shoppers, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for visitors. The bustling streets were filled with families and friends enjoying the holiday spirit.

On Saturday, December 2, 2023, a variety of activities took place, including a gingerbread contest at the historic Chateau DeMores. Children and families had the opportunity to take photos with Santa at the Harold Schafer Center. A “Camp Christmas Choir and Hymn Sing” organized by Badlands Ministries provided musical entertainment, while horse-drawn wagon rides departed from the post office, adding a charming touch to the festivities.

The Medora Community Center played a key role in the weekend’s events. It kicked off the celebrations with a “Remembrance Light Stroll” on Friday evening, where community members could reflect on the season’s meaning. On Saturday, participants enjoyed a group painting class, a lively bingo game, and a community dinner that brought together residents and visitors alike.

The Old Town Hall Theater contributed to the festive atmosphere by presenting multiple showings of “A Very Merry Badlands Christmas.” This performance offered a heartwarming way for attendees to unwind after a day filled with holiday activities.

As Medora continues to celebrate its unique cowboy heritage, the Old Fashioned Cowboy Christmas festival remains a beloved tradition that strengthens community ties and welcomes visitors from near and far. The event not only highlights the charm of this small town but also showcases the spirit of togetherness that defines the holiday season.
