Staten Island Walk to End Alzheimer’s Raises Nearly $60K
On September 20, 2025, over 750 participants gathered at Wolfe’s Pond Park in Staten Island for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s disease, raising nearly $60,000 to support Alzheimer’s care, research, and community programs. Organized by the Alzheimer’s Association’s New York City Chapter, the event united families, caregivers, students, and local supporters in a shared mission to combat this devastating disease.
Personal Stories Highlight the Impact of Alzheimer’s
Among the top fundraisers were Staten Island residents Christine and Anthony Pizzariello, who drew from their personal experiences to inspire others. Both of their mothers are currently living with dementia. “While raising funds for our walk, my husband and I have come to the realization of how common this disease is,” Christine said. She emphasized the importance of community, stating, “Gathering with others who are affected by this disease rejuvenates my soul. It reassures us we are not alone.”
Christine, who works as a teacher, also expressed her commitment to raising awareness for younger generations, stating she participates “for my nieces and nephews, as well as my many students.”
Community Engagement and Support
The event featured lively activities, including a group warm-up led by the I.S.24 Dance Company, under the direction of Therese Causi. Local educator and radio host Vinnie Medugno returned as the emcee, energizing the crowd throughout the morning.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 9,200 individuals in Richmond County are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. The funds raised from this event are vital for expanding the nonprofit’s free services and support programs across Staten Island.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s has been a longstanding initiative, with roots tracing back to 1989 when it began as the Memory Walk. This year’s event was coordinated by a dedicated volunteer committee, including Anne Matrone, Ashley Marie Davis, Rhea Restivo, Alice Acampora, Barbara Doty, Jessica Davis, Marie Christman, Eileen Fields Cohen, and Marisa Streppone. Key sponsors included The Brielle, Rampulla & Newstad, Northwell Health, and SHERO Senior Living Advisors. Local businesses such as La Dolce Bakery and Bagels N Buns also contributed by donating food and beverages for participants.
Donations for the Staten Island Walk to End Alzheimer’s remain open through the end of the year at act.alz.org/statenislandwalk. The Alzheimer’s Association is a global voluntary health organization dedicated to advancing research and improving care for individuals affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
