The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on October 27, 2023, that it will deploy monitors to polling sites in six jurisdictions ahead of the upcoming election on November 4, 2024. Oversight will be provided by the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, following requests from state Republican parties that expressed concerns regarding compliance with federal statutes. Attorney General Pam Bondi emphasized the importance of transparency at polling places, stating, “Transparency at the polls translates into faith in the electoral process, and this Department of Justice is committed to upholding the highest standards of election integrity.” Bondi assured the public that the DOJ would allocate necessary resources to facilitate fair and transparent elections.

The DOJ framed the monitoring effort as part of its responsibility to enforce civil rights protections established under the Voting Rights Act and other related laws. Personnel from the Civil Rights Division will be available to receive complaints and coordinate with U.S. Attorney’s offices on Election Day.
