Emphasizing Community: The Case for Traditional Trick-or-Treating
Halloween is evolving, presenting a choice between traditional trick-or-treating and modern Trunk-or-Treat events. While both offer enjoyment, the traditional form serves a vital civic purpose—strengthening community ties that are increasingly strained.
Trunk-or-Treat events, where families gather in parking lots to collect candy from decorated cars, are particularly beneficial in rural areas where homes are far apart. These gatherings provide a safe and inclusive environment, allowing every child to participate. They also serve as effective outreach opportunities for local businesses, churches, and civic organizations, enabling them to connect with families and promote their initiatives.
Yet, when Trunk-or-Treating replaces traditional neighborhood activities, something essential is lost. Trick-or-treating is more than just a way to gather candy; it is a cherished community ritual. For one night each year, it encourages people to step out of their homes and engage with their neighbors.
Building Trust is a crucial aspect of this tradition. Approaching a neighbor’s door and receiving a warm greeting, even if brief, diminishes the invisible barriers that often separate us. It humanizes our neighbors and dispels the unproven belief that they could be a threat.
Moreover, these interactions contribute to Social Cohesion. The friendly exchanges fostered during trick-or-treating create a sense of community resilience. They establish the “eyes on the street” that enhance neighborhood safety long after the Halloween decorations are taken down.
Trunk-or-Treat events typically occur on weekends, offering convenience for families. However, the magic of Halloween is fundamentally tied to October 31st. When community organizations or municipalities attempt to shift the focus away from this date, or establish differing official times, the ritual meant to unify becomes fragmented. The tradition thrives when we collectively embrace Halloween night, allowing communities—large and small—to come together after dusk.
To address modern safety concerns without abandoning neighborhood traditions, a Sidewalk Table model could be introduced. Neighbors can set up decorated tables or stations on their lawns or sidewalks. This arrangement not only ensures visibility for candy distribution but also places adults side-by-side on the curb, creating a rare opportunity for social interaction while children enjoy the festivities.
The best Halloween celebrations are not defined by speed or safety alone, but by their authenticity and ability to foster connection. Trunk-or-Treat events serve as valuable options for families in rural areas, but they should augment, not replace, neighborhood traditions within urban settings on October 31st.
Ultimately, Halloween stands as one of the few traditions that encourage us to open our doors and hearts to those who live nearby. It is vital to recognize that the true essence of the night unfolds on the sidewalks, where children create lasting memories and neighbors build a stronger community.
Aaron Wittnebel, a consumer representative and member of the state’s Council on Mental Health, advocates for preserving the spirit of traditional trick-or-treating while addressing community safety concerns. He resides in rural Becker County, where the importance of community interaction remains a priority.
