Hundreds Rally in Willmar Against Authoritarianism on October 18

On October 18, 2023, around 600 individuals gathered in the parking lot of Willmar’s Middle School to peacefully protest against perceived authoritarianism from the current U.S. Administration. This event, dubbed the “No Kings” rally, conveyed a strong message advocating for a President of the Republic rather than a monarch-like leader. Participants held placards with statements such as “Save democracy from autocracy,” emphasizing the importance of preserving democratic principles.
Among the speakers was a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union, who highlighted the importance of due process in immigration matters. They stressed that any deportation raids must be conducted lawfully, with necessary warrants, and that local law enforcement should not assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in what they described as harsh actions against nonviolent, undocumented individuals.
Local resident Karen Kramer, from the League of Voters of the Willmar Area, reinforced the significance of civic engagement, advocating for peaceful protests as a means to protect and sustain democratic values. Kramer encouraged residents to participate actively in their governance and express their views on critical issues.
The rally featured a diverse crowd, including a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, who spoke against the militarization of domestic law enforcement and called for vigilance in safeguarding the Constitution, fair elections, and access to healthcare. The atmosphere was vibrant, with participants singing songs like “Give Peace a Chance” and “We Love America,” further enriching the sense of unity among attendees.
Many participants displayed placards that read “No kings, no autocracy,” “When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty,” and “Basic humanity is not radical.” The overarching sentiment echoed a desire for a government that respects the voices of its citizens and maintains democratic integrity.
While the majority of the gathering remained focused on political themes, a small group of younger individuals at the edge of the crowd sought to shift the discussion towards religious themes, suggesting a recognition of a divine authority. Their presence did not disrupt the main proceedings but indicated a divergence in perspectives regarding leadership and governance.
The rally in Willmar reflects a broader concern among citizens about the trajectory of U.S. democracy and the importance of active participation in defending its principles. The event underscored a collective commitment to oppose authoritarian tendencies and uphold the values that define a democratic society.
