Incumbents Face Challenges in Early Midterm Primaries
The initial round of primary elections for the 2026 midterm elections is revealing significant challenges for incumbents, particularly in Texas, where political landscapes have shifted dramatically. This year’s primaries marked a pivotal moment, with two incumbent members of Congress forced into runoffs and another losing their seat entirely.
In Texas’ 33rd Congressional District, former Representative Colin Allred is heading to a runoff against current Representative Julie Johnson. Allred, who had initially aimed for a U.S. Senate seat, pivoted to this congressional race after Rep. Jasmine Crockett entered the Senate contest. Johnson, a seasoned attorney, previously served in the Texas House for six years before securing Allred’s former seat in 2024. The upcoming runoff on May 26, 2026, will likely favor the winner, as the district leans heavily Democratic following recent redistricting.
Al Green, a long-serving Democratic congressman known for his vocal opposition to former President Donald Trump, is also facing a runoff against newly elected Rep. Christian Menefee in the newly drawn 18th Congressional District. Green, 78, switched to this district after his previous constituency was modified to favor Republican candidates. Menefee, only recently sworn in after winning a special election, represents a younger generation of Democratic candidates pushing for leadership change within the party.
The primary contests have been particularly intense in Texas, as confusion among voters has risen due to multiple elections in a short timeframe. Some Houston residents have cast ballots for congressional races three times in four months, highlighting the chaotic nature of the current political environment.
In a surprising turn, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Republican and former Navy SEAL, was ousted by Republican state lawmaker Steve Toth. Crenshaw, who was seeking a fifth term in Texas’ 2nd Congressional District, was notably the only House Republican in the state not to receive Trump’s endorsement prior to the primaries. His campaign faced significant challenges from the far-right faction of his party, which criticized him for not aligning closely enough with Trump’s policies. Toth, supported by an endorsement from Senator Ted Cruz, declared after his victory that the campaign had been a referendum on political accountability.
Crenshaw’s independent stance often set him apart from his peers, particularly in a political climate where loyalty to Trump remains a litmus test for many Republicans. He has openly acknowledged the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory, a position that has occasionally put him at odds with other party members. His candid remarks about some Republican politicians being “grifters” further intensified criticism against him from conservative circles.
As Texas and North Carolina continue to face unpredictable political landscapes, the early primaries have set the stage for a competitive midterm election year. With incumbents facing considerable challenges, the outcomes of these races could signal broader shifts in party dynamics and voter sentiment moving forward.
