Incumbents Face Challenges in Early Midterm Primaries

Al Green, a long-serving Democratic congressman known for his vocal opposition to former President Donald Trump, is also facing a runoff against newly elected Rep. Christian Menefee in the newly drawn 18th Congressional District. Green, 78, switched to this district after his previous constituency was modified to favor Republican candidates. Menefee, only recently sworn in after winning a special election, represents a younger generation of Democratic candidates pushing for leadership change within the party.

In a surprising turn, Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Republican and former Navy SEAL, was ousted by Republican state lawmaker Steve Toth. Crenshaw, who was seeking a fifth term in Texas’ 2nd Congressional District, was notably the only House Republican in the state not to receive Trump’s endorsement prior to the primaries.
