Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli continues to earn endorsements from Democratic figures in his campaign for the New Jersey governorship. The latest endorsement came from the New Era Democrats, a center-left political group based in Brooklyn, marking a significant moment in Ciattarelli’s attempt to unseat incumbent Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ). This endorsement represents at least eight Democratic endorsements that Ciattarelli has garnered as he prepares for the upcoming election.

“We are proud to endorse Jack Ciattarelli for Governor of New Jersey,” stated the group’s President, Celia Iervasi. She emphasized the pressing economic issues facing residents, saying, “As life continues to become unaffordable for the working class and New Jersey continues to be one of the highest taxed states in the country, Jack is the right person that is needed to make life more affordable for the residents of the Garden State.” Iervasi expressed confidence in Ciattarelli’s leadership, noting that the organization looks forward to joining a coalition of supporters for the election.

Ciattarelli’s list of Democratic endorsements also includes prominent figures such as North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco, North Bergen Commissioner Allen Pascual, Dover Mayor Jim Dodd, Garfield Mayor Everett Garnto Jr., Branchville Councilman Jeff Lewis, Branchville Mayor Anthony Frato, and former Hudson County Democratic Chairman Anthony Vainieri. Notably, Garnto switched to the Republican Party after endorsing Ciattarelli.

Political Landscape Shifts as Election Approaches

The New Era Democrats are known for their history of supporting Republican candidates when they believe it is warranted. Previously, the group endorsed Lee Zeldin in his unsuccessful bid for the New York governorship in 2022, as well as Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn). Interestingly, they have also backed more progressive candidates, such as former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Recent polling indicates a competitive race ahead. A Rutgers-Eagleton poll released on March 15, 2024, shows Sherrill leading Ciattarelli by 50% to 45% among likely voters. This lead, while still in favor of Sherrill, reflects a significant reduction from the 20-point advantage she held over Ciattarelli in June.

As the election approaches, the growing support from Democratic leaders could play a crucial role in shaping voter perceptions and influencing the outcome of the gubernatorial race in New Jersey. With the political landscape evolving, Ciattarelli’s campaign appears to be gaining momentum, potentially setting the stage for a closely contested election.
