Levin Raises Alarm Over I-5 Closures During Marine Corps Event

Rep. Mike Levin expressed significant concern on Wednesday regarding potential closures of portions of Interstate 5 this weekend. This situation arises amid reports that Navy ships will fire live ordnance over the freeway during the Marine Corps’ 250th birthday celebration at Camp Pendleton. The proposed closures could impact a crucial section of the highway between Orange and San Diego counties, affecting over 80,000 daily travelers, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

“This event is a moment to be proud — to honor two and a half centuries of valor and excellence,” Levin stated. He represents the north coastal area of San Diego and South Orange County. He emphasized the need to celebrate this milestone appropriately, stating, “It deserves to be celebrated in a way worthy of their legacy and consistent with their values: honor, courage, and commitment.”

Levin voiced his concerns about the potential closures, highlighting that they could last several hours in both directions on Friday and Saturday. He remarked on the usual heavy traffic along the I-5 corridor, noting that extended closures would lead to significant congestion and hardships for local residents, businesses, and emergency services.

The event, titled “Sea to Shore – A Review of Amphibious Strength,” is expected to attract around 15,000 attendees and will feature Vice President JD Vance. According to military sources, the celebration will include a live amphibious assault demonstration, though it remains uncertain if any projectiles will be fired over the interstate.

Governor Gavin Newsom also expressed his disapproval regarding the potential military display. His Press Office shared on X, “This would be an absurd show of force, and totally uncalled for during a government shutdown when members of the military cannot even get a paycheck.” The emphasis on this sentiment underscores the heightened scrutiny around military actions during a period when many service members are facing financial uncertainty.
