Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Maine Senate, has recently come under scrutiny for a tattoo that resembles a Nazi symbol. In an Instagram video, Platner revealed that he has covered up the tattoo, which originally depicted a skull and crossbones, with a new design featuring a Celtic knot and dogs. He stated that the new artwork better reflects his current values and lifestyle, particularly his commitments to anti-fascism and anti-racism.

In response to reports suggesting he was aware of the tattoo’s Nazi connections, Platner firmly denied these claims. “It was not until I started hearing from reporters and D.C. insiders that I realized this tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol,” he said in a statement to ABC News. He expressed disgust at the insinuation that he knowingly bore such a symbol, stating, “I absolutely would not have gone through life having this on my chest if I knew that.”

Platner explained that he got the tattoo years ago while on leave in Croatia with fellow Marines, describing himself as “very inebriated” at the time. He has since expressed regret over the incident, noting that he plans to have the original tattoo removed entirely.

Controversial Social Media Posts Emerge

The tattoo controversy is not the only issue facing Platner’s campaign. Recently, old social media posts have resurfaced, revealing controversial statements he made, including identifying as a “communist” and suggesting that political resistance might necessitate firearms. These posts date back to 2010 and have drawn criticism from various quarters.

When discussing these past remarks, Platner attributed much of his earlier rhetoric to feelings of post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in combat in the Middle East. He stated that his experiences left him feeling disconnected and troubled, leading him to express himself in ways he now regrets.

The backlash has intensified as Platner has gained support from prominent political figures, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. This endorsement has positioned him as a formidable challenger to the incumbent, Senator Susan Collins. As the campaign progresses, Platner faces the challenge of addressing these controversies while maintaining the momentum of his campaign.

Critics have suggested that the establishment is attempting to undermine his candidacy by highlighting these issues. Platner himself remarked, “This has come up because the establishment is trying to throw everything it can at me. It is terrified of what we are trying to build here.”

As Platner navigates this turbulent period, his ability to connect with voters and articulate his vision for Maine will be crucial. The upcoming election could serve as a pivotal moment for both his personal journey and his political aspirations.
