Massullo’s Cleaners Celebrates 100 Years with Centurion Honor
Massullo’s Cleaners & Tailors marked a significant milestone on March 15, 2024, as it celebrated its 100th anniversary and was inducted into the West Virginia Centurion Chamber of Commerce. The ceremony took place at the company’s location on High Street, with Secretary of State Kris Warner presiding over the event. A former Morgantown resident, Warner expressed his personal connection to the establishment, noting that he and his family have been loyal customers for over three decades.
During his address, Warner reminisced about the care Massullo’s provided to his family, particularly when his children, who served in the Civil Air Patrol and the U.S. Air Force, brought their uniforms for tailoring. “They took great care of me,” he stated, highlighting the staff’s expertise in handling military insignia and measurements without needing explicit instructions.
The history of Massullo’s dates back to 1925 when Italian immigrant Domenico Massullo and his wife, Raphael, opened Massullo’s Tailoring on Pleasant Street. Today, the business is owned by their granddaughter, Linda Cerone, who took over after the passing of her husband, Tony Cerone, and brother, Carl Massullo Jr.. “If it wasn’t for my crew, I couldn’t have done this myself,” Cerone reflected on the journey, expressing her determination to reach this 100-year milestone.
The Centurion program, initiated by the Secretary of State’s office in 2019, recognizes businesses that have operated continuously for a century or more. Warner emphasized its uniqueness, stating, “It’s the only one of its kind in the nation.” He elaborated on the resilience required for businesses like Massullo’s to thrive through historical challenges, including world wars, economic downturns, and pandemics.
For the celebration, Massullo’s provided an array of food and treats to attendees. Cerone and Warner marked the occasion by cutting a commemorative cake together. Warner presented two Centurion plaques to Massullo’s, one for the High Street location and another for their Suncrest Towne Centre pickup and drop-off site.
As Massullo’s Cleaners & Tailors steps into its next century, it not only commemorates its rich history but also its vital role within the Morgantown community. With a legacy built on quality service and personal connections, the business continues to be a cherished institution in West Virginia.
