Texas DPS Enhances Safety Measures Ahead of Election Season

As Election Day approaches, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of voters and polling locations. Residents are encouraged to download the iWatchTexas mobile app, which allows them to report any suspicious activity that could pose a threat to public safety. This initiative aims to empower Texans to play an active role in maintaining security during this critical civic engagement period.
DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin emphasized the importance of public vigilance, stating, “Election season is a critical time for civic engagement, and ensuring the process remains safe and secure is top priority for DPS.” He highlighted that state, local, and federal partners are collaborating continuously to protect polling places and election infrastructure. However, he noted that public awareness remains a vital component of safety efforts. “If you see something that doesn’t seem right, report it through iWatchTexas,” Martin added.
The iWatchTexas platform is designed to help Texans report suspicious behaviors that may indicate criminal, terrorist, or safety-related threats. Many incidents are often preceded by warning signs that go unreported. The app allows citizens to assist law enforcement in detecting and addressing potential dangers before they escalate.
Individuals are encouraged to report various types of suspicious activities, including:
– Attempts to gain unauthorized access to polling locations.
– Inquiries about security features and procedures by unfamiliar individuals.
– Social media posts suggesting a desire to commit violence.
– Accounts promoting vandalism, sabotage, or arson.
– Intimidation of voters, election officials, or volunteers.
– Tampering with mailboxes, ballot boxes, or voting machines.
– Requests for sensitive information without a clear need.
– Purchases of materials that could be used to create weapons or explosives.
– Photographing or filming security features.
– Cyber attacks targeting election infrastructure.
Reports can be submitted via the iWatchTexas app, online at www.iwatchtx.org, or by calling 1-844-643-2251. The process is quick, typically taking less than five minutes, and all reports are reviewed by law enforcement analysts. While providing contact information is optional, it allows for follow-up questions. Importantly, the app is free to download and available in both English and Spanish.
In March 2024, DPS introduced a new feature within the iWatchTexas app aimed at addressing threats stemming from foreign influence. This enhancement allows users to specify concerns related to foreign adversaries. Such threats may encompass a range of coercive tactics, including harassment, surveillance, or attempts to intimidate individuals connected to the electoral process. Reports indicating potential foreign influence will be prioritized and routed directly to DPS for further investigation.
It is important to note that iWatchTexas is not intended for emergency situations. Individuals requiring immediate assistance should contact emergency services by calling 911.
The proactive measures by the Texas DPS underscore the state’s commitment to ensuring a secure election environment. By leveraging community engagement through the iWatchTexas app, Texans can contribute to a safer electoral process.
