Decades of Alien Hunting Yield New Insights on Life’s Origins
Humanity’s quest to uncover extraterrestrial life has gained momentum since the 1950s, fueled by advancements in technology and scientific inquiry. A recent analysis led by Seyed Sina Seyedpour Layalestani from the Islamic Azad University in Iran has reviewed the most compelling evidence gathered over decades, revealing significant findings regarding the building blocks of life on Earth and beyond.
One of the most notable pieces of evidence is the Murchison meteorite, which fell to Earth in 1969. This ancient rock, estimated to be over seven billion years old, predates our Solar System. Recent studies indicate that it contains all five nucleobases that form DNA and RNA: adenine, guanine, thymine, cytosine, and uracil. These molecules, confirmed to be extraterrestrial in origin, challenge the notion that life’s ingredients are exclusive to Earth.
Another crucial find comes from the Orgueil meteorite, which exploded over France in 1864. This carbonaceous meteorite not only harbours amino acids such as glycine and alanine but also features structures resembling microfossils. Initially dismissed as contamination, recent research has validated their extraterrestrial origin, further supporting the notion that the ingredients for life may be widespread in the universe.
Exploring the Solar System for Signs of Life
Space probes have significantly advanced our understanding of life beyond Earth. Rovers on Mars have discovered liquid water streams and frozen ice, while the Cassini spacecraft found vast glaciers on Saturn’s moon Enceladus. Additionally, the Phoenix lander confirmed the presence of water ice just three centimetres below the Martian surface. These findings underscore that the essential requirements for life—water, organic compounds, and energy sources—appear to exist throughout our Solar System.
The search for life extends beyond physical samples to the realm of interstellar dust. Radio telescopes have detected over a hundred organic molecules, including amino acids and components of nucleic acids, in these clouds. Such discoveries bolster the panspermia hypothesis, which posits that life’s building blocks are dispersed across space, potentially seeding planets throughout the galaxy.
Despite the compelling evidence of life’s ingredients, the search for intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations remains unfulfilled. Decades of UFO sightings and efforts by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) have not yielded any confirmed evidence of alien intelligence. Most UFO sightings have been attributed to natural phenomena, while claims of alien bodies presented to Mexico’s Congress in 2023 were quickly dismissed as fabrications.
The Role of Technology in the Search
The challenge lies not in the absence of evidence for the building blocks of life, but in proving that these components organized into living organisms elsewhere in the universe. While the presence of DNA building blocks in ancient meteorites suggests that the chemistry necessary for life occurs in space, it does not confirm the existence of alien bacteria.
Innovative technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, are beginning to play a crucial role in this search. New AI algorithms can analyze meteorite chemistry to differentiate between biological and non-biological origins of organic compounds. Machine learning techniques help filter noise from radio signals and identify atmospheric biosignatures on distant exoplanets.
As researchers continue to unravel the mysteries of life beyond Earth, they have discovered that the pieces are present. The building blocks of life exist throughout space; whether these components have assembled into living organisms, whether microbial or intelligent, remains one of the universe’s greatest unanswered questions.
