Discovering Baltimore’s Top Ceviche Spots: A Culinary Journey
Ceviche, a celebrated dish originating from Peru, has found a vibrant expression in Baltimore’s culinary scene. Gastronomy enthusiast Yuyu Huang embarked on a quest to identify the best ceviche offerings in the city, visiting notable restaurants such as Puerto 511, La Calle, and Clavel. Each venue presents its unique interpretation, showcasing fresh ingredients and distinct flavors.
Puerto 511: A Homestyle Experience
At Puerto 511, diners can indulge in a carefully curated five-course meal that changes seasonally. The standout ceviche, known as Causa Acevichada, features marinated fish paired with mashed yellow potatoes and a rich sauce called tiger’s milk. This sauce combines citrusy tang, garlic, and chili, creating a refreshing taste that complements the dish.
During Huang’s visit in late August, the meal also included roasted veal heart, tamales, fried rice, and a delightful dessert of ice cream. The portions were generous, priced at $59 per person, making this an inviting option for a relaxed dinner with friends. The homestyle ambiance further enhances the experience, encouraging a sense of community and shared enjoyment.
La Calle: A Romantic Setting
Located in the picturesque Inner Harbor, La Calle boasts a spacious dining area with warm lighting and an open kitchen, making it an ideal spot for couples. The ceviche options here are impressive, with the Ceviche del Día being a daily special that Huang particularly enjoyed. The tuna served was succulent, and its presentation—with rosy pink sauce and green avocado—made it visually appealing.
Another ceviche option, Aguachile de la Pasión, was noted for its freshness, although Huang found the seasoning slightly too sour. Nevertheless, the overall dining experience, complemented by well-seasoned Barbacoa de Cordero—tender lamb that practically fell off the bone—was satisfying. Prices are around $60 per person, and due to its popularity, online reservations are highly recommended.
Clavel: A Citywide Favorite
Clavel has garnered a reputation as a must-visit destination, highlighted by its James Beard recognition. On her second visit, Huang discovered the restaurant’s true gem: the ceviches. The Salmon Crudo, which straddles traditional ceviche boundaries, features creamy slices of salmon accompanied by crispy tortilla, creating a delightful contrast in texture.
The Campechana is another standout, featuring a mix of sweet shrimp, octopus, and scallops in a zesty lime juice. Served in a goblet-style glass, it is abundant with seafood and complemented by crunchy vegetables and crispy pork strips. Prices range from $50 to just over $80 per person, reflecting the generous portions and high-quality ingredients.
Expect a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and conversation, although potential diners should prepare for wait times of 20 to 40 minutes.
Baltimore’s ceviche scene reflects local businesses’ creativity, integrating fresh seafood with cultural influences. As Huang notes, while these restaurants excel in ceviche, they also offer a broader range of culinary delights worth exploring. Ceviche not only serves as a tantalizing introduction to these establishments but also invites diners to delve into the rich flavors and experiences they have to offer.
