GigaBite Robotics Team Seeks Community Support for STEM Growth

The GigaBite Robotics team, a community-focused robotics initiative based in South Lake Tahoe, is currently seeking donations to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) opportunities for local students. Comprising 11 middle and high school students, the team has made significant strides in promoting hands-on STEM education through various activities and mentorship programs.

In the 2023-2024 season, GigaBite Robotics, known as FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Team 20681, has already made a notable impact. The team has successfully mentored a rookie FIRST Lego League (FLL) team, which earned the Rising Stars Award and competed at the Northern Nevada Championship. Additionally, GigaBite Robotics has organized STEM camps, workshops, and community events aimed at introducing students to robotics, engineering, and coding.

Community Engagement and Educational Initiatives

Now entering its fifth year in the FIRST Tech Challenge, GigaBite Robotics emphasizes the importance of real-world engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving through a principle known as Gracious Professionalism. This year’s challenge, titled Decode, has pushed the team to innovate, utilizing data-driven design and custom CAD-built mechanisms, alongside seamless integration of software and hardware.

The team’s influence extends beyond competition settings. They have taken on various responsibilities, including:

  • Mentoring younger teams and providing support to FTC teams across Nevada and internationally.
  • Volunteering at FTC and FLL competitions while hosting a local scrimmage.
  • Partnering with local schools and Lake Tahoe Community College to conduct a STEM Discovery Night.
  • Teaching over 500 students through hands-on STEM camps and outreach programs over the past three summers.

Funding and Future Goals

To sustain and expand these initiatives, GigaBite Robotics is appealing to the community for financial support. Donations will directly fund essential resources, including robot parts, 3D filament, registration and competition fees, tools, travel, and outreach programs. This support ensures that cost is never a barrier for students eager to explore STEM opportunities.
