Remembering Harold Klonecky: A Life of Teaching and Community
Harold Meredith Klonecky, a cherished educator and community member, passed away at the age of 98 in Torrance, California, on November 16, 2025. His lifelong commitment to education and community engagement left a lasting impact on countless students and families.
Born on May 22, 1927, in Dickinson, North Dakota, to Irma and Constant Klonecky, Hal, as he was affectionately known, pursued his passion for teaching early in life. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Dickinson State University, where he began his career teaching English and Drama.
A Career Marked by Dedication
In 1955, Klonecky relocated to Torrance, California, where he took on a teaching position at North High School. His commitment to education continued to grow, leading him to earn a Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California. Over the next 25 years, he served as Assistant Principal and later as Principal at Torrance High School, retiring in 1987.
Dr. Klonecky was beloved by students, faculty, and parents alike. Even in his later years, he remained active within the school community, engaging with retirees and fostering relationships that spanned generations. His passion for teaching and mentorship resonated deeply with those he encountered.
A Life Beyond the Classroom
Outside of his professional life, Klonecky enjoyed a range of activities. He was an avid golfer and a devoted reader, particularly fond of mystery novels. His love for dance made him a sought-after partner at social events, where his patient and kind nature shone through, endearing him to many.
Klonecky is survived by his family, including Theresa and Jeff Heiney and their son, Erick; Jen and Patrick Sullivan and their children Kieran, Aidan, Declan, and Bridget. He was predeceased by his son, Christopher Klonecky, who also shared in his commitment to education and community service.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Klonecky’s life on December 15, 2025, during a Visitation and Rosary from 16:00 to 20:00 at the Coastal Funeral Center, located at 25001 Narbonne Ave, Lomita. A Funeral Mass will take place on December 16, 2025, at 10:00 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, situated at 25511 Eshelman Ave, Lomita. Following the Mass, a reception will be held at Hof’s Hut at 11:30 at 23635 Crenshaw Blvd in Torrance.
As the community reflects on Dr. Klonecky’s remarkable life, his contributions to education and the joyful spirit he brought to those around him will not be forgotten. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and a lasting impact on the lives he touched.
