Study Reveals Significant Drop in Transgender College Student Numbers

A recent study indicates a notable decline in the number of college students identifying as transgender in the United States. According to a report titled The Decline of Trans and Queer Identity among Young Americans, the percentage of transgender and non-binary students has halved over the past two years, dropping from nearly 7% in 2023 to under 4% in 2023. This analysis was conducted by Eric Kaufmann, a Canadian professor of politics at the University of Buckingham, and published by the Centre for Heterodox Social Science.

The report draws on data from a survey executed by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), which gathered responses from over 50,000 undergraduates across more than 250 American colleges. Kaufmann noted that there is an increasing number of students identifying as heterosexual compared to recent years. He emphasized that college freshmen are significantly less likely to identify as transgender than their senior counterparts.

Kaufmann observed that the rise in transgender identification began in 2010 and continued until its peak in 2023. He expressed uncertainty about whether this downward trend will revert to pre-2010 levels, stating, “If the youngest cohort represents the future, then yes, that would seem to indicate that these trends will continue.”

The report suggests that the changing landscape of campus culture may be contributing to this decline. Kaufmann described a “vibe shift” on college campuses, suggesting that nonconforming gender and sexual identities may be perceived as less fashionable among young people than in previous years. He indicated that many young transgender individuals are grappling with confusion over their identities.

Kaufmann posited that better mental health among younger individuals might also play a role in this observed decrease. He predicts that this trend could lead to a reduction in surgeries and hormone treatments, which can have lasting physical implications. “One of the hopes here is that the demand for those procedures will fall as this trend beds down,” he said.

While the study presents compelling data, some critics argue that it lacks a definitive explanation for the decline. Kaufmann’s findings have sparked significant discussion on social media, with his post on the platform X reaching over 17 million views and eliciting mixed reactions from various political groups.

Kaufmann noted that while some on the left attribute the decline to recent political developments, others on the right express concern that positive interpretations of the data might undermine efforts for reform regarding gender ideology in schools. Despite the pushback, Kaufmann maintains confidence in his analysis and its implications for understanding the evolving dynamics of gender identity among young Americans.
