UA Little Rock Professor Joins National Documentary for America’s 250th Anniversary

Dr. Arya Basu, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been selected to participate in an ambitious national documentary initiative titled “Our American Story.” This project is part of the celebrations leading up to the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026, aiming to honor the diverse individuals and ideas that have shaped the nation.

The Our American Story initiative seeks to compile the largest audiovisual archive of American narratives ever created. This archive will be preserved in the Library of Congress, serving as a living time capsule for future generations. Each participant contributes their personal journey, values, and vision for America, creating a rich tapestry of innovation and resilience representative of all 50 states.

Highlighting Personal Stories and Values

Dr. Basu stands out as the sole researcher from Arkansas to be interviewed for this project, making his feature particularly significant. The interview took place at the Old State House Museum in downtown Little Rock on October 6, 2023. Basu described the location as “aptly chosen and soaked in history,” a fitting backdrop for sharing his narrative.

Reflecting on the honor, Basu stated, “I was speechless and spellbound. Even now, I can’t believe they found my story. Being part of America’s 250th celebration is an honor I never imagined.” His work focuses on human-computer interaction and biomedical visualization, with recent research inspired by deeply personal experiences, including his mother’s heart surgery and the passing of his uncle, who was an applied physicist.

Bridging Science and Humanity

Basu’s journey from India to Arkansas has profoundly influenced his scientific perspective. He recalled crossing the Mississippi River and being captivated by the state’s natural beauty and tranquility. “Science, like good soul food, comes from a soul that is at peace with its environment,” he explained. His appreciation for Arkansas extends beyond its scenery; he believes it is a region where significant scientific advancements occur.

When asked about the message he hopes to convey for America’s upcoming milestone, Basu highlighted the importance of perseverance in both science and nation-building. “Persistence is what keeps this nation moving forward,” he remarked. “Building a nation is not easy, and maintaining one is even harder. For the next 250 years, I hope we never lose sight of the need to stay persistent in pursuing what our collective hearts know is right and important.”

Looking ahead, Basu’s research will delve into human decision-making and spatial reasoning, focusing on topics such as maze navigation and enhancing artificial intelligence for Air Force mission requirements.

Basu expressed that being featured in Our American Story is both humbling and meaningful for him and his family. “My family is over the moon,” he said, adding that they joked about his potential entry into politics. Yet, the pride in having a piece of their story preserved in the Library of Congress is evident.

For Dr. Basu, this experience reinforces the notion that science, compassion, and creativity are fundamental threads that unite all Americans. “Science has no borders,” he concluded. “It’s not just where you are that matters. It’s what you strive to contribute to the world. Being part of this project reminds me that every story, no matter where it begins, can inspire something greater.”
