Alcaraz Dominates Moutet to Advance in Australian Open
In a compelling display of skill and determination, Carlos Alcaraz secured a decisive victory against Corentin Moutet in the third round of the Australian Open, winning with a score of 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. The match, held on March 1, 2024, at the iconic Rod Laver Arena, showcased Alcaraz’s prowess, despite his admission that he lost the battle of drop shots to the left-handed Frenchman.
Alcaraz, the world’s No. 1-ranked player, faced a unique challenge as Moutet employed an array of shots, including drop shots, slices, and even an underarm serve, keeping Alcaraz on high alert throughout the match. “When you play someone like Corentin, you don’t know what’s going to be next,” Alcaraz remarked in his on-court interview, highlighting the unpredictable nature of his opponent’s game.
Alcaraz Relishes Competitive Spirit
The match was anything but routine, as Moutet’s clever tactics injected an energetic atmosphere reminiscent of a festival. Alcaraz experienced moments of tension, particularly in the second set, where he relinquished a 3-0 lead, allowing Moutet to rally for four consecutive games. Despite this setback, Alcaraz remained composed, countering with his own impressive shots and tweeners.
Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz humorously recounted a moment of frustration near the end of the first set when he joked to his support team, “I’m not going to run to get those.” His playful acknowledgment of Moutet’s drop shots demonstrated the camaraderie and competitive spirit that characterized their encounter.
The crowd’s response was notably different from Moutet’s previous match, where he faced boos for an underarm serve. This time, he received cheers, particularly after executing a perfect lob late in the match, followed by a triumphant fist pump. After securing a crucial point with a winning volley, he celebrated by tipping his cap, earning the crowd’s admiration.
Next Challenge Awaits Alcaraz
Alcaraz’s next opponent will be Tommy Paul, the No. 19 seed. Paul advanced to this stage after Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired due to injury while trailing 6-1, 6-1. Alcaraz expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming matchup, stating, “We have great battles against each other. The matches against each other are always a great level.”
In other matches on the same day, Daniil Medvedev made headlines by coming back from two sets down to defeat Fabian Marozsan with a scoreline of 6-7 (5), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3. This victory marked the fifth time Medvedev has rallied from a two-set deficit to win a Grand Slam match. “I was not calm after the first set because I was mad at myself for not doing better,” Medvedev admitted. He will face Learner Tien, who secured his place in the fourth round with a 7-6 (9), 6-4, 6-2 win over Nuno Borges.
As the tournament progresses, Alcaraz’s pursuit of a career Grand Slam continues, with his performance against Moutet serving as a testament to his resilience and adaptability on the court.
