Fans of fantasy author Brandon Sanderson can look forward to a new addition to his acclaimed Cosmere universe, with the announcement of a novel titled The Fires of December. The revelation occurred during his annual fan convention, Dragonsteel Nexus, held on October 12, 2023, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. The audience greeted the news with enthusiastic cheers and applause, demonstrating the excitement surrounding Sanderson’s works.

Sanderson addressed his audience, explaining the context of this new project. “For a number of years now, we’ve had a Cosmere novel every year,” he stated, adding that fans had inquired about the next installment for 2026. “We’ve got one,” he confirmed, before unveiling the cover art for the upcoming novel.

What to Expect from ‘The Fires of December’

The novel is set to be part of Sanderson’s “special projects” collection and will explore themes connected to the character Hoid. During the announcement, Sanderson described the book as fitting into a series of stories about Hoid’s experiences. He noted, “I really enjoyed writing Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. There are more terrible things that have happened to Hoid in the Cosmere.” This latest addition will continue to chronicle the character’s misfortunes, with Hoid narrating tales of his challenges.

During the convention, Sanderson captivated the audience by reading excerpts from the first two chapters of The Fires of December. The narrative focuses on the titular character, December, and Sanderson indicated that the text from this reading will be shared with fans later on through his newsletter and website.

Release Details and Crowdfunding

While an official release date for The Fires of December has yet to be determined, Sanderson provided insights into how fans can access the book. The novel will be included in his next crowdfunding campaign, which is scheduled for March 2024. For those who prefer not to participate in the crowdfunding effort, Tor Publishing is set to distribute the book in time for the holiday season next year.

Sanderson’s announcement has generated considerable excitement among his readership, who eagerly anticipate further developments around this new Cosmere venture. As he continues to expand his universe, fans can remain engaged through various platforms and updates from the author.
