The Cleveland Browns have interviewed Grant Udinski for their head coach position, a move that underscores the team’s commitment to a new direction following the dismissal of Kevin Stefanski. Udinski, born on January 12, 1996, is just two weeks younger than the Browns’ star defensive end, Myles Garrett, who recently set a new record for most sacks in a season.

Udinski’s interview with general manager Andrew Berry took place on January 17, 2024, as the Browns seek to revamp their coaching staff after a disappointing season. The franchise has been searching for stability, as evidenced by its fluctuating records over the last six years: 11-5, 8-9, 7-10, 11-6, 3-14, and 5-12 under Stefanski.

Udinski’s Rapid Rise in Coaching

Udinski has gained attention as one of the NFL’s rising stars, described by The Sporting News as “the NFL’s brightest Wunderkind.” His coaching journey began in 2019 as a graduate assistant at Baylor University, where he faced considerable challenges, including sleeping in his car for a week until he was taken in by a colleague. This early struggle reflects his determination and resilience.

In 2020, under head coach Matt Rhule, who later moved to the Carolina Panthers, Udinski joined the Panthers as a coaching assistant. His trajectory continued upward, and by 2022, he was working with the Minnesota Vikings as the assistant head coach and special projects coordinator. By 2023, he had taken on the role of assistant quarterbacks coach, later becoming the assistant offensive coordinator in 2024.

Udinski’s most recent success came with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he served as offensive coordinator under head coach Liam Coen. The Jaguars made significant improvements, going from a 4-13 record in the previous season to an impressive 13-4, clinching the AFC South title in 2025. Their scoring surged from 311 points to 474, contrasting sharply with the Browns’ total of 279 points.

Challenges Ahead for the Young Coach

If selected as head coach, Udinski would not only be stepping into a demanding role but also become the youngest head coach in NFL history. This position comes with high expectations, especially in a franchise that has experienced a tumultuous coaching history.

The Browns have interviewed a total of nine candidates, focusing primarily on offensive-minded coaches. Other candidates include current Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, along with Dan Pitcher of the Cincinnati Bengals, Todd Monken from the Baltimore Ravens, former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, and Rams pass-game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase. Additionally, defensive candidates such as Jim Schwartz, who has served as the Browns’ defensive coordinator for three years, are also in the mix, with a second interview scheduled for January 19, 2024.
