Canadiens Seek Redemption After Tough Loss Ahead of Sabres Clash
The Montreal Canadiens are looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss as they prepare for a crucial matchup against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. The Canadiens, who have secured at least a point in five of their last six games, suffered a frustrating defeat against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. After leading 2-0 through two periods, the Canadiens allowed the Capitals to score three unanswered goals, resulting in a 3-2 overtime loss.
In the third period, Ethen Frank scored twice for Washington, with the second goal coming just 1:54 before the end of regulation. Connor McMichael clinched the game for the Capitals with a goal in overtime, leaving Montreal players disheartened. Forward Brendan Gallagher expressed the team’s frustration, stating, “Anytime you’re up two goals going into the third, you should be able to win that hockey game.”
With this defeat, the Canadiens dropped to a record of 4-1-1 in their last six games but remain in third place in the Atlantic Division. The division is highly competitive, with only two points separating the top three teams. Coach Martin St. Louis acknowledged the disappointment of letting a lead slip away, commenting, “It’s always disappointing, no matter what building you’re in, when you’re up 2-0 after two and don’t win.”
Power Play Struggles and Player Highlights
The Canadiens struggled on the power play, going 0-for-4, including a missed opportunity during a 5-on-3 advantage that lasted over a minute. St. Louis noted the team’s potential on special teams, saying, “We have good players out there. It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t put the puck in the net there.”
Despite the loss, goaltender Sam Montembeault had a strong performance, making 39 saves. This marked his first defeat in four starts since returning from a conditioning stint in the AHL. The Canadiens welcomed back forward Josh Anderson, who scored a shorthanded goal in his return after missing six games due to an upper-body injury.
The Sabres, on the other hand, are riding a wave of momentum, having secured their 14th victory in the last 16 games. They defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Wednesday, with a remarkable shooting performance, scoring five goals on just 14 shots. This achievement marks their best shooting percentage in a game since 1988. Rasmus Dahlin shone brightly, notching two power-play goals, a feat not accomplished by a Buffalo defenseman since Rasmus Ristolainen in December 2015.
Buffalo’s coach Lindy Ruff mentioned the need to monitor forward Josh Norris, who left the game against Philadelphia with an upper-body injury. Norris had previously missed 24 games earlier in the season due to a similar issue.
Looking Ahead
The Canadiens and Sabres first met this season on October 20, where Montreal emerged victorious with a 4-2 win, thanks to Jakub Dobes‘s 30-save performance. As they prepare to face each other again, the stakes are high for both teams. With Buffalo trailing Montreal by just five points and possessing two games in hand, the outcome of Thursday’s game could significantly impact the playoff picture in the Atlantic Division.
After this matchup, the Canadiens will face the Sabres two more times this month, making this a critical juncture for both teams as they vie for a strong playoff position.
