Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland will be sidelined for at least a week due to a sprained big toe on his right foot. The injury occurred on January 14, 2026, during the Cavaliers’ decisive 133-107 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in Philadelphia. Garland did not participate in the rematch against the same team two nights later, where the Cavaliers narrowly won 117-115.

In a statement released on January 18, the Cavaliers confirmed the nature of the injury, stating, “Darius Garland injured his right great toe on January 14 at Philadelphia. Further evaluation and imaging at Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine revealed a Grade 1 right great toe sprain. Garland will be re-evaluated in seven to ten days.” During this recovery period, Garland will undergo treatment and rehabilitation, and updates regarding his condition will be provided as necessary.

The Cavaliers are relieved that this injury appears less severe compared to one Garland sustained on his left foot during the 2024-25 season. In that case, he attempted to play through the pain during the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Indiana Pacers but ultimately required surgery after the team’s elimination. His recovery delayed his return until the eighth game of the following season, and his workload was carefully monitored by Coach Kenny Atkinson upon his return.

Prior to this injury, Garland had an impressive run, participating in 16 consecutive games and averaging 18.8 points and 6.9 assists per game this season. With Garland unavailable, Jaylon Tyson is expected to step into the starting lineup.

Garland’s absence could mean missing up to six games, depending on the length of his recovery. The Cavaliers are set to host the Oklahoma City Thunder on January 19 at Rocket Arena, with tip-off scheduled for 14:30. Following this matchup, they will face the Charlotte Hornets on January 21, host the Sacramento Kings on January 23, and then travel to meet the Orlando Magic on January 24. The Cavaliers will also play the Magic again on January 26 and are set to host the Los Angeles Lakers on January 28.

As the team navigates this challenge, the focus will be on maintaining momentum and ensuring Garland’s recovery is prioritized for the long term.
