Chicago Bulls Re-Sign Yuki Kawamura After Recovery from Injury
Yuki Kawamura has officially returned to the NBA, as the Chicago Bulls re-signed the Japanese point guard to a two-way contract this week. This decision comes following Kawamura’s recovery from a blood clot in his lower right leg, a condition that had sidelined him for approximately twelve weeks after being diagnosed in October 2023.
At just 24 years old and standing at 5-foot-8, Kawamura is the shortest player in the league. His presence is particularly timely for the Bulls, who are currently facing a guard shortage. Coach Billy Donovan expressed his satisfaction with Kawamura’s commitment during his recovery, stating, “He’s worked really, really hard. I’m happy for him because at that point, when you have something like that, you just don’t know what that’s going to look like in the future.”
Recovery Journey and Challenges
Kawamura’s journey back to the court was not without challenges. After being waived in October due to his diagnosis, he remained in Chicago, where he completed his recovery under the supervision of the Bulls’ medical team. Blood clots are a serious medical condition that often require athletes to take extended breaks from their sport. During this time, athletes typically must take anticoagulant medication to reduce the risk of further complications, which can also increase the danger of internal bleeding from physical contact.
Despite being medically cleared, Kawamura was held out of all contact activities during his recovery. Donovan highlighted that while Kawamura could have played, the medical staff prioritized his long-term health. Following his clearance, he successfully participated in practices with the Windy City Bulls in the G League, preparing for his return to the main roster.
Impact on the Bulls’ Backcourt
Kawamura’s return is particularly crucial given the current state of the Bulls’ roster. The team is dealing with injuries to key guards, including Coby White, who is limited by calf issues, and Josh Giddey, who is sidelined with a strained left hamstring. Backup guard Tre Jones has stepped into the starting role but is ideally suited for around 25 minutes of playtime per game.
Other players, such as Ayo Dosunmu and Matas Buzelis, have also taken on additional responsibilities as on-ball playmakers, although this is less natural for them. With his abilities as a pass-first point guard who excels beyond the arc, Kawamura presents a potentially effective short-term solution for the Bulls’ backcourt issues.
Originally signed to a two-way contract in July 2023, Kawamura impressed during the summer league, demonstrating the skills that led to his re-signing. Donovan stated, “We’re certainly going to need another ball handler. That would help. He obviously has played in the league. I want to see where he’s at physically — he’s obviously had a long stretch of not any live action.”
The Bulls are optimistic about Kawamura’s impact as they navigate this challenging period. With his return, the team hopes to stabilize its backcourt and continue its pursuit of success in the upcoming games.
