Coalfield Dominates Cloudland 51-6, Advances in Playoffs
In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the Coalfield Yellow Jackets defeated the Cloudland Highlanders 51-6 on March 15, 2025, in the first round of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Class 1A playoffs. This victory not only ended Cloudland’s season but also propelled Coalfield into the next round of competition.
From the outset, Coalfield established control of the game. The Yellow Jackets quickly built a substantial lead, demonstrating their offensive prowess and defensive strength. By halftime, the score reflected a significant advantage, and Coalfield maintained this momentum throughout the second half. Although Cloudland managed to score in the fourth quarter, it was not enough to close the gap.
The defeat brought Cloudland’s season to a close with an overall record of 5-6, including a commendable 5-2 mark in Region 1-1A. In contrast, Coalfield improved its record to 9-2, remaining undefeated in Region 2-1A play with a perfect 7-0 record.
Key Players Shine in Dominant Victory
A standout performer for Coalfield was senior running back Jaiden Bunch, who is a semifinalist for the 2025 Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Award. Bunch rushed for an impressive 109 yards and scored two touchdowns, significantly contributing to the team’s offensive success. His ability to control the game tempo was evident throughout the match.
The historical context of the matchup added to the significance of the game. This meeting marked the 11th confrontation between Coalfield and Cloudland, with Coalfield now holding an 8-3 advantage in their series. The last time Cloudland triumphed over Coalfield was on November 19, 2021, when they narrowly won 22-21 during the state quarterfinals.
Coalfield’s head coach, Benson Napier, celebrated the victory, which also elevated him on the program’s all-time wins list. His leadership has been instrumental in maintaining the Yellow Jackets’ strong tradition in postseason play.
Looking ahead, Coalfield is set to host Jo Byrns High School next Friday at Rochelle Field for the second round of the TSSAA Class 1A playoffs, with kickoff scheduled for 19:00. The defeat marks the end of the season for Cloudland, who can take pride in their winning region record and a successful return to the postseason, setting a hopeful tone for the upcoming 2026 season.
