Colby Parkinson Emerges as Key Tight End for Rams in 2025
The Los Angeles Rams are experiencing a remarkable season in 2025, mirroring their success from 2021, which culminated in a victory at Super Bowl LVI. Central to this resurgence is veteran tight end Colby Parkinson, who has transformed from a struggling player to one of the breakout stars of the season.
Parkinson signed a lucrative three-year contract in 2024 that positioned him as a starter. However, during the earlier part of the season, he faced challenges in living up to those expectations. With veteran tight end Tyler Higbee sidelined, Parkinson was thrust into the primary role, but his performance did not reflect the investment made in him. The arrival of rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson added pressure, as many anticipated Parkinson’s playing time would diminish.
Despite the odds, Parkinson has demonstrated resilience and growth. It appears that the competition from Ferguson may have sparked a renewed focus in him. His performance speaks volumes; he has recorded a career-high eight touchdown receptions this season, placing him among the top tight ends in the league.
Rams Tight End Group Thrives
The Rams have transformed their tight-end production from a lackluster performance in 2024 to an impressive showing in 2025. Last season, the tight end group combined for just 461 receiving yards and three touchdowns. In stark contrast, they have amassed 1,128 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns this season. The addition of Ferguson has played a significant role, with the rookie contributing 231 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Interestingly, Parkinson’s season did not start strongly; he did not score his first touchdown until Week 7. However, once he found the end zone, he quickly established himself as a reliable target, scoring multiple touchdowns on two occasions. This shift in performance has raised discussions regarding his future with the team, particularly with his contract running through 2026.
Future Considerations for the Rams
The Rams are now faced with important decisions as they approach the offseason. Parkinson’s emergence poses questions about the future of Higbee, who has struggled with injuries, missing 21 of 34 games in the past two seasons. The team must weigh the benefits of extending Higbee’s contract against the rising contributions from both Parkinson and Ferguson.
As the Rams prepare for the playoffs, the potential for Parkinson to secure a starting position in 2026 adds excitement to their roster dynamics. The situation illustrates a positive dilemma for the coaching staff, as they evaluate how to best utilize their wealth of talent at the tight end position.
The transformation of Colby Parkinson from a struggling player to a standout performer encapsulates the competitive spirit of the Rams as they strive for another championship run.
