Cooper Flagg Emerges as Key Player for Mavericks in NBA
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg has quickly made a name for himself in the NBA, showcasing his scoring ability and helping propel the team to a successful start in the season. Flagg, who has averaged 18.4 points per game, ranks second among rookies, just behind his college teammate, Kon Knueppel, of the Charlotte Hornets. His recent performances have been pivotal in the Mavericks securing five victories in their last seven games.
During a practice session, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd shed light on the conversations he and the coaching staff have had with Flagg to encourage his offensive aggression. Kidd acknowledged Flagg’s potential, saying, “When you look at him in high school, him in college, he can score the ball. So I would say yes. Now to scoring 30 or 40 this soon? Anything’s possible in this league, and he’s one that’s taken full advantage of that.”
In the last seven games, Flagg has raised his scoring average to an impressive 25.7 points, shooting an efficient 54.5% from the field and 81.1% from the free-throw line. This surge has played a crucial role in the Mavericks’ recent success, which saw them achieve a 5-2 record during this stretch.
Flagg’s breakthrough moment came during a game against the Los Angeles Clippers, where he was encouraged by his teammates and coaches to take a more proactive role in the offense. Kidd remarked, “This all started against the Clippers. Being aggressive early and not waiting. I think sometimes he defers to [veteran players] because they’re vets and they can score, too.”
The young player reached a career-high of 42 points in that game, making him the youngest player in NBA history to achieve a 40-point game. Flagg managed to score 40 points in regulation but was limited to just two points in overtime after rolling his ankle late in the fourth quarter. Fortunately, he was not listed on the injury report and is expected to be available for the Mavericks’ upcoming home game against the Detroit Pistons.
Kidd emphasized that Flagg’s scoring ability is just one aspect of his game, stating, “Coop was going, but it doesn’t always mean you have to go to Coop. You can use Coop in different ways. It’s a learning experience for us.” The head coach acknowledged that there were moments when other players needed to be more aggressive rather than relying solely on Flagg.
As Flagg continues to adapt to the professional level, his willingness to embrace feedback and grow will be vital for his development and the team’s performance. The Mavericks, who have shown promise early in the season, will look to Flagg to maintain his momentum and contribute significantly as they move forward.
The excitement around Cooper Flagg’s emergence as a key player for the Mavericks is palpable, and fans are eager to see how his journey unfolds in the coming games.
