Davis Mills Leads Texans to Victory Amid Stroud’s Absence
The Houston Texans secured a hard-fought 23-19 victory against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night, improving their season record to 6-5. This win came as starting quarterback C.J. Stroud missed his third consecutive game due to a concussion. Backup Davis Mills played a pivotal role in the triumph, guiding the team to a perfect 3-0 record in his absence.
Mills completed 16 of 30 passes for 153 yards, adding two touchdowns and maintaining a clean slate with no interceptions. His performance was crucial, especially considering the Texans’ defense, which recorded an impressive eight sacks against Bills quarterback Josh Allen. As the game concluded, Houston’s defense ranked first in the NFL for both yards allowed per game (264.3) and points allowed per contest (16.5), according to ESPN stats.
Following the victory, Mills addressed the dynamics of the quarterback position. Despite his success as a starter, he affirmed that there is no competition for the role. “I don’t think there’s a competition,” Mills stated, per Matt Young of the Houston Chronicle. He emphasized his commitment to supporting the team, saying, “C.J.’s the starter for this team. I’m just doing everything I can to bring my best foot forward every day.”
Mills’ statistics over the three games in which he has filled in for Stroud underscore his capability. According to Pro Football Reference, he has completed 69 of 116 passes (59.5%) for a total of 719 yards, five touchdowns, and just one interception. His performances have not only showcased his skills but also highlighted his potential to lead the team effectively.
In an interview with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Mills expressed his desire to demonstrate his ability to win significant games. “I just want it to be seen that I am capable of going out there and winning big games,” he remarked. With the Texans still eyeing playoff contention, Mills acknowledged the importance of maintaining momentum. “This was a big divisional win for our team as we’re still continuing to push forward throughout the season.”
Looking ahead, the Texans are set to face the Indianapolis Colts on November 30, 2023, where Stroud is expected to return to the starting role. On the sidelines during Thursday’s game, Stroud provided support to Mills, offering pointers during the Bills’ offensive drives. “He was coming over to me and giving me pointers if he saw something throughout the game,” Mills noted, adding that Stroud is eager to return to the field.
As the Texans navigate the remainder of the season, the interplay between Mills’ current success and Stroud’s anticipated return will be a focal point for fans and analysts alike. With the playoffs within reach, Houston’s quarterback situation remains a significant storyline as they aim to build on their recent success.
