Deandre Ayton Struggles in Lakers Debut Against Warriors
The Los Angeles Lakers faced a challenging start to the season on October 22, 2025, suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors. The game marked the debut of Deandre Ayton, the Lakers’ most significant offseason acquisition. Unfortunately for Lakers fans, Ayton’s performance has raised concerns about his fit within the team’s system.
In his first outing, Ayton struggled significantly, scoring just 10 points on seven shots while also contributing six rebounds and one block in 34 minutes of play. Despite his height advantage, he was unable to capitalize on opportunities in the paint, failing to make an impact on either end of the court. Head Coach JJ Redick faces a difficult task as Ayton’s inconsistencies could pose a problem throughout the season.
Ayton’s challenges were particularly evident against the Warriors’ small lineup. He was often outmatched on the boards, especially by Draymond Green, who effectively neutralized Ayton’s size. The former No. 1 overall pick also appeared hesitant to assert himself offensively, opting not to post up against smaller defenders like Green and Jonathan Kuminga. This lack of aggression raises questions about Ayton’s ability to adapt to the Lakers’ playing style.
His performance in the pick-and-roll was particularly troubling. Ayton admitted to making several errors in executing plays with teammate Austin Reaves, which contributed to costly turnovers. Reaves noted the difficulties in their two-man game, stating that Ayton might be a “confusing” target in pick-and-roll situations. This miscommunication could hinder the team’s offensive flow moving forward.
Defensively, Ayton has never been regarded as a dominant rim protector. He averages only 1.1 blocks per 36 minutes, and his career defensive box plus-minus stands at -0.2. This lack of defensive presence has led to two teams parting ways with him despite his notable talent at just 27 years old.
For Lakers fans, the outlook for Ayton is mixed. While he possesses the skills to deliver standout performances, consistent struggles may make for a frustrating season. As the team looks to regain its championship form, Ayton’s ability to adapt and contribute effectively could prove crucial in their pursuit of success.
