The Detroit Lakes boys’ hockey team has secured a spot in the Section 8A championship after defeating the East Grand Forks Green Wave 3-1 in the semifinals. The match took place at the Ralph Engelstad Arena on February 21, 2024, marking a significant milestone for the Lakers under the leadership of head coach Ben Noah.

In the first period, neither team managed to score, setting the stage for a tightly contested game. The breakthrough came in the second period when Hudson Pettit redirected a shot from Rhett Walter during a power play, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead with just 7:30 remaining in the period.

The momentum continued into the third period as Bauer Walter extended Detroit Lakes’ lead to two goals just three minutes into the frame, also capitalizing on a power play opportunity. The Lakers excelled in special teams, finishing the game with two goals from five power-play chances.

Despite the deficit, Tucker Lovejoy, the leading goal scorer for East Grand Forks, managed to halve the Lakers’ lead with a goal at 7:47 in the third period. However, the Lakers’ defense held strong against the Green Wave’s efforts to equalize. Easton Kennedy sealed the victory, scoring an empty-net goal with just 21 seconds left on the clock.

Goalkeeper Griffin Lindberg played a pivotal role in the win, making an impressive 38 saves out of 39 shots on goal. The Lakers’ defense was also effective, successfully killing all four of East Grand Forks’ power plays.

The victory propels Detroit Lakes to the Section 8A championship, where they will face the top-seeded Warroad on February 26, 2024, at the same venue. The Lakers’ triumph is not only a testament to their skill but also a historic achievement for the team as they aim for their first championship title.

As the excitement builds for the upcoming finale, more in-depth coverage of the Lakers’ remarkable journey and strategies will be provided leading up to the championship game.
