The Philadelphia Eagles have officially parted ways with offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo following a disappointing exit from the playoffs. The decision comes after the Eagles lost to the San Francisco 49ers 23-19 in the first round of the NFC playoffs, a game that underscored the team’s struggles throughout the season.

In a statement released on Tuesday, head coach Nick Sirianni acknowledged the challenging decision, stating, “I have decided to make a change at offensive coordinator. Kevin has been integral to this team’s success over the last five years, not only to the on-field product but behind the scenes as a valued leader.” Sirianni emphasized his respect for Patullo and expressed confidence that he would continue to succeed in his coaching career.

This marks yet another change in play callers for quarterback Jalen Hurts, who will now have his seventh different offensive coordinator since joining the Eagles in 2020. The team’s offensive performance this season was markedly below expectations, slipping from seventh to 19th in points scored and from eighth to 24th in total yards. The Eagles also dropped from second in rushing yards last season to 18th this year.

Despite the disappointing statistics, there were some positive developments during Patullo’s tenure. The Eagles achieved a league-leading touchdown success rate of 70.5% in the red zone and became only the fifth team in NFL history to have two receivers surpassing 1,000 yards, alongside a tight end with over ten touchdown receptions.

Patullo, who is 44 years old, attempted to model the Eagles’ offense after last year’s successful strategy, which heavily relied on their running game. However, when the results did not match expectations, the Eagles struggled to establish a consistent offensive identity. This inconsistency culminated in the playoff loss, where the team could only manage six points against the 49ers.

The Eagles’ offensive struggles have raised questions about the overall direction of the team as they aim to build upon their previous successes. The upcoming search for a new offensive coordinator will be critical in determining the future trajectory of Hurts and the Eagles’ offense.

With a critical off-season ahead, the Eagles will need to focus on establishing stability and improving their offensive strategy as they prepare for the 2024 season. The decision to let go of Patullo reflects the urgency the organization feels to return to a competitive form in the NFL.
