FSU Softball Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat FAU 9-5
Florida State University (FSU) softball showcased resilience on March 1, 2024, rallying from an early four-run deficit to secure a 9-5 victory over Florida Atlantic University (FAU) during the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational. The sixth-ranked Seminoles improved their record to 7-1, demonstrating a remarkable turnaround following a disappointing loss to Texas Tech.
The game began unfavorably for FSU, which found itself trailing 4-1 after FAU’s explosive four-run second inning. The Owls capitalized on key opportunities, putting the Seminoles under pressure. However, FSU responded decisively in the fourth inning, producing a four-run rally that shifted the momentum of the game.
Freshmen Hayley Griggs and Makenna Sturgis, along with junior shortstop Isa Torres, each delivered crucial runs with consecutive RBI doubles. The turning point came when freshman infielder Marin Heller drove in the go-ahead run with a single, scoring Torres and putting FSU ahead 5-4.
With their confidence restored, the Seminoles continued to dominate. In the fifth inning, Ashtyn Danley and Anna Hinde hit back-to-back home runs, further extending FSU’s lead. Sturgis capped off the offensive display with another home run in the seventh, solidifying her standout performance with a game-high three hits and three RBIs.
The Seminoles’ pitching was bolstered by sophomore Jazzy Francik, who earned the win after delivering 4.2 innings of solid performance, allowing only three hits and one run while striking out three batters. Francik improved her season record to 4-0. Although Danley started the game in the circle, she was replaced after yielding four runs on two hits in just 1.2 innings. Marlee Gaskell stepped in to record the final two outs of the second inning before Francik took over.
As FSU prepares for its next challenge, the team will return to the Edward C. Moore Complex to face off against seventh-ranked UCLA on Saturday at 19:00. That game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Seminoles’ ability to recover after an early setback highlights their determination and skill, setting a promising tone for the rest of the tournament.
