Hawaii Punter Billy Gowers Enters Transfer Portal Seeking New Opportunities

The University of Hawaii football team is facing yet another transition as punter Billy Gowers has announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Gowers, who is 29 years old, leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having set a program record with a punting average of 46.24 yards per season. His departure marks the third consecutive offseason where the Rainbow Warriors will need to find a new starting punter.

Gowers expressed his gratitude for his time in Hawaii, stating, “I had such a great time in Hawaii. You know how good the program is and how great the people are.” He joined the Warriors as a freshman in July and has enjoyed a six-month experience that introduced him to the local culture and community. The Australian-native reflected positively on his journey, highlighting the support from both players and coaches.

As Gowers looks to advance his professional football career, he acknowledges the urgency of his age. “I’m 29. I’m older than a lot of college kids,” he said. Gowers emphasized the need to maximize his opportunities in a sport where athletic careers can be brief. He believes that playing in a larger conference may increase his visibility to professional scouts, particularly as the Mountain West Conference undergoes significant changes, with the addition of schools like UTEP and Northern Illinois in 2026.

While James “Thor” Rendell, another Australian punter, initially accepted a scholarship from Hawaii before signing with Notre Dame, Gowers clarified that financial incentives were not the primary reason for his transfer. “There’s money in college football, but it’s not the crux of my decision,” he explained. He emphasized that his experience in Hawaii has been incredible, and the coaching staff has been supportive throughout his journey.

Before pursuing football, Gowers played Australian rules football and even opened his own barbershop in Melbourne. It was at his father’s suggestion that he connected with Nate Chapman, the director and head punting coach at Prokick Australia, in the summer of 2024. Gowers successfully completed a tryout and began training, which ultimately led to his scholarship offer from Hawaii’s special teams coordinator, Thomas Sheffield.

Gowers has shown impressive skills on the field, capable of executing both right-footed and left-footed punts with remarkable distance. His versatility allows him to launch punts behind blockers or on rollouts, and he currently ranks 10th nationally in punting average.

As the Rainbow Warriors embark on yet another season without Gowers, the search for a new starting punter will begin, leaving open the question of who will fill the void left by this standout athlete.
