Ilia Malinin Shines as “Quad God” at Milan Cortina Olympics
American figure skater Ilia Malinin made headlines at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics with his stunning performances, solidifying his self-proclaimed title of the “Quad God.” Competing on the Olympic stage for the first time, Malinin showcased his extraordinary talent and charisma, captivating audiences with his athleticism and artistry.
Malinin, a product of Fairfax County, is the reigning world champion and has already accumulated multiple titles in the Grand Prix Final. His Olympic debut was marked by a memorable backflip that left spectators in awe. Despite facing tough competition and making a few errors in his free skate, Malinin’s performance contributed significantly to Team USA’s success, helping them secure a gold medal in the team event.
From Lutzboy to Quad God
The nickname “Quad God” is not merely a moniker but a reflection of Malinin’s impressive achievements in the sport. Initially, he used the handle Lutzboy, named after a popular skating move. However, after successfully landing two quad jumps in 2020, he rebranded himself. “Everyone kind of got angry at me, like, ‘Why’d you name yourself Quadg0d? You only landed two quads,’” Malinin recalled in an interview with writer Alex Prewitt. “And I was like, ‘Well, I guess now it’s time for me to land the rest of them.’ The username was my motivation.”
Since adopting the title, Malinin has more than lived up to it. He has landed seven quad jumps in a single routine and is the first skater to successfully execute the quad axel in competition, completing four and a half rotations in the air. Such achievements have elevated him beyond the realm of typical athletes, capturing the essence of what it means to be a “Quad God.”
Challenges and Triumphs in Competition
During the team event at the Olympics, Malinin faced fierce competition from skaters like Yuma Kagiyama of Japan. Although he fell behind Kagiyama in the short program and faced challenges in the free skate, his overall performance was enough to help Team USA clinch gold. His resilience and ability to perform under pressure highlight his potential for further success in the individual competition.
The upcoming days will see Malinin attempt to land the quad axel at the Olympics, a move that could further cement his legendary status. Scheduled to perform on February 10 and February 13, his efforts will be closely watched by fans and competitors alike. If he successfully lands the quad axel, the title of “Quad God” will be beyond dispute.
As the Olympics progress, Malinin’s journey continues to inspire young athletes and figure skating enthusiasts worldwide. His blend of technical skill and theatrical flair not only embodies the spirit of competition but also redefines the possibilities in the sport. With a growing list of accomplishments at just 21 years old, Ilia Malinin is undeniably a name to watch in the world of figure skating.
