Iola Mustangs Aim for Recovery After Tough Loss to Wellsville
The Iola Mustangs faced a challenging defeat against the Wellsville Eagles, losing 38-32 in a closely contested match held on March 15, 2024. This setback extended the Mustangs’ losing streak to three games as they prepare for the upcoming War on 54 Basketball Tournament.
In a game characterized by strong defensive efforts, Wellsville maintained a narrow lead throughout, holding a five-point advantage until the end. Iola’s coach, Emily Sigg, emphasized the importance of mental resilience, stating, “We got beat mentally early, and that set the tone for the whole game.”
The Mustangs struggled offensively, particularly in the second quarter, where they managed only four points. Freshman guard Haidyn Desmarteau emerged as a standout performer, leading the team with 18 points, primarily scored in the fourth quarter. Early contributions from junior forward Zoie Hesse and junior guard Brooklyn Holloway kept Iola competitive, but ultimately the Mustangs could not overcome the Eagles’ defense.
Looking Ahead to the War on 54 Tournament
As the Mustangs regroup for their upcoming games, they will shift focus away from the Pioneer League. On March 19, they will host the Cherryvale Chargers from the Tri-Valley League, followed by a matchup against the Crest Lady Lancers from the Three Rivers League on March 21. The Lady Lancers enter the tournament with a strong record of 8-1 and are currently on a four-game winning streak.
Sigg remains optimistic about her team’s potential, recalling their previous success in the tournament. “We were in the championship last year, and I think we can be in the championship game again this year,” she remarked. “But we have to want to be there; we have to decide we’re going to be there.”
Iola will prepare for these crucial matches, aiming to overcome their recent mental hurdles. The Mustangs are scheduled to tip-off against the Chargers at 17:30 on Tuesday, followed by the contest against the Lady Lancers at the same time on Thursday. Both games will take place at Iola High School, providing an opportunity for the Mustangs to regain their momentum and confidence as they head into the tournament.
As the Iola Mustangs look to bounce back from their recent struggles, the upcoming games will be critical in determining their path in the tournament and beyond.
