The rising profile of Grant Udinski, the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, has positioned him as a potential candidate in the upcoming head coaching cycle. Although he will not turn 30 until next month, his innovative approach and success with the Jaguars have garnered attention from NFL teams seeking fresh leadership.

Udinski’s name has gained traction, particularly following the trend set by Sean McVay, who was hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams just before his 31st birthday in 2017. Many teams have since sought similar young, dynamic offensive minds to invigorate their rosters and drive high-scoring performances. According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, Udinski may be the next candidate to replicate McVay’s success, as he has demonstrated a strong ability to develop talent and enhance team performance.

Career Progression and Impact

Udinski began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Baylor University in 2019. He quickly moved up the ranks, joining Matt Rhule at the Carolina Panthers in 2020. Although the Panthers struggled during Rhule’s tenure, Udinski continued to build his resume, eventually joining the Minnesota Vikings in 2022 as part of Kevin O’Connell‘s staff. His ascent continued when he became the assistant quarterbacks coach and later the assistant offensive coordinator.

His contributions have been notable, particularly during the seasons led by Kirk Cousins, one of which was impacted by injuries. Additionally, Udinski played a significant role in Sam Darnold‘s unexpected success in the 2024 season. This year, he has also contributed to the development of Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars’ quarterback, who has experienced a resurgence amid the team’s overall success. Currently, Jacksonville boasts a record of 9-4 and leads the AFC South.

Despite the team’s achievements, Lawrence’s individual statistics have not shown a significant improvement compared to previous seasons. Nonetheless, the Jaguars’ overall performance has placed Udinski in a favorable light, keeping his stock on the rise.

Future Prospects and Considerations

While Udinski’s youth may raise questions for teams in need of a head coach, his innovative approach and successful track record cannot be overlooked. Some analysts speculate that his lack of play-calling responsibilities, which currently rest with head coach Liam Coen, could be a potential drawback. However, this remains speculative, as his contributions to the Jaguars’ offense have been substantial.

Even if Udinski does not secure a head coaching position in 2026, his name is likely to remain prominent in coaching discussions for years to come. He has already demonstrated significant interest from multiple franchises; in 2025, he interviewed for offensive coordinator roles with five different teams. As the NFL landscape continues to evolve, Udinski’s innovative strategies and youthful energy may well position him as a central figure in the league’s future coaching cycles.
