Keppel Falls Short in CIF Quarterfinals Against Leuzinger, 53-46
The Keppel girls basketball team faced a heartbreaking defeat in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 quarterfinals on February 19, 2026, losing to Leuzinger by a score of 53-46. Despite a valiant comeback effort, the Aztecs were unable to overcome a significant early deficit, ending their season with a record of 17-14.
Keppel’s coach, Kenny Phan, expressed pride in his team’s resilience despite the loss. He noted that the Aztecs will return every player next season, aiming to secure the program’s second CIF championship, having won their first in 2025. “We met a team that is a little tougher than us, more physical than us,” Phan said. “The great thing is we have zero seniors. So they know exactly what they need to do in the offseason to come back stronger.”
Leuzinger, with a record of 20-13, is set to host St. Margaret’s in the semifinals. The Olympians capitalized on a sluggish start from Keppel, racing to a 17-0 lead before the Aztecs could register a score. Despite this challenging beginning, Keppel managed to fight back, narrowing the gap to just three points as the game drew to a close.
Phan acknowledged his team’s initial struggles, particularly during the first quarter, where they failed to score until the final minute. Keppel’s offense struggled against Leuzinger’s aggressive defense, which disrupted their passing and forced numerous turnovers. The Aztecs finally broke through with a field goal, allowing them to settle into the game.
As the match progressed, Keppel began to exploit their speed and fundamental skills to chip away at the Olympians’ lead. By halftime, they had reduced the margin significantly, demonstrating their potential to turn the game around. Phan remarked, “The fact that we stood in the game, we fought… I know it’s there.”
Coming out of the break, Keppel displayed improved performance against Leuzinger’s front court, and their shooting began to find its rhythm. Leuzinger’s coach, Bo Corona, anticipated Keppel’s resurgence, stating, “I told them at halftime, (Keppel) is too good. They’re gonna start making some of those shots, you’re gonna have to wave the storm. The storm is coming.”
The Aztecs closed the gap to three points in the final minute, igniting hope for a dramatic comeback. However, they faltered on critical possessions, unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Tatyana Aubry of Leuzinger ultimately sealed the victory for her team, sinking a three-pointer with just 12 seconds remaining, finishing the game with a remarkable 22 points.
Keppel’s journey may have ended in disappointment, but the team’s prospects for the future appear bright. With a roster full of returning players, they are poised to build on their experiences and strive for greater achievements next season.
