Kings Face Challenging Road Trip Amid Kopitar’s Absence
The Los Angeles Kings embark on a demanding five-game road trip starting with their matchup against St. Louis, missing their captain, Anže Kopitar, who is sidelined with a fractured foot. This trip also includes games against Dallas, followed by back-to-back encounters in Nashville and Chicago, concluding in San Jose. The Kings have struggled, winning only one of their first six games, and they will need to address significant defensive issues to improve their standings.
Kopitar’s injury is particularly concerning. He sustained the fracture during a game against Colorado, marking his first major injury since 2011. The veteran forward has been a consistent presence, missing double-digit games only once in his 19-year career. His absence is felt deeply, especially as he started the season strong, accumulating four points in the first four games and now sits just 25 points behind Marcel Dionne for the most career points in Kings history. Projections suggest he will be out for at least a month.
The Kings’ performance statistics underscore their struggles. They have allowed the first goal in four of their six games and have given up three or more unanswered goals in five of those matches. Their special teams have also faltered, with both power play and penalty kill rates causing concern. Furthermore, the team has yet to hold a lead in the third period of any game this season.
Despite these challenges, players like Adrian Kempe remain optimistic. “Everybody knows that we’re gonna get wins, we’re gonna be better at the start of games,” he stated, emphasizing the need to improve as the season progresses. Coach Jim Hiller echoed these sentiments, noting that while the team has often trailed, he was not overly concerned about their starts until their recent 4-3 overtime loss to Carolina.
The Kings’ ability to rally from behind has been a silver lining. They managed to secure their only victory against Vegas after trailing by two goals in the third period. Kevin Fiala, who scored in the recent loss, highlighted the need to focus on taking leads rather than continuously playing catch-up. “It’s good to know we can chase, but it’s always nicer to have the lead,” he remarked.
As they prepare for this road trip, the Kings will likely experiment with their line combinations due to Kopitar’s absence. Kempe and Fiala have shown potential when playing together, outscoring opponents and generating ample scoring chances. This could be critical as they face formidable opponents like the Blues and the Stars, both of whom have had strong starts to their seasons.
The Kings’ road trip presents both a challenge and an opportunity. With their current win percentage at .167 and a points percentage of .333, they are eager to turn around their fortunes. The team’s performance during this stretch could set the tone for the rest of the season as they strive to regain their form and make a playoff push without their captain.
