LaGuardia Airport Reopens as NYC Airports Recover from Snowstorm

New York City is gradually returning to normalcy following a severe snowstorm that caused significant disruptions to air travel. LaGuardia Airport, which had suspended operations after 1 p.m. on March 14, 2024, resumed flights at 9 p.m. the same day, according to reports from CBS News New York. Although operations restarted, the Federal Aviation Administration indicated that flights would not fully resume until the following morning.

The storm resulted in widespread cancellations, with over 90% of flights at LaGuardia grounded during the worst of the weather. Across the city’s three major airports, including JFK International and Newark Liberty International, over 2,800 flights were canceled. Nationally, FlightAware reported a staggering total of more than 11,000 canceled flights, a figure not seen since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and more than double the number of cancellations from the previous day.

Airports and Transportation Services Reopen

All major airport hubs in the tri-state area, including LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark, reopened following the storm, which left behind a blanket of 8 to 11 inches of snow. While this restoration of service has brought some relief to travelers, challenges remain. As of 10 a.m. on March 15, 2024, there were still 759 canceled flights and 100 delays reported at these airports, indicating ongoing complications in the recovery process.

Passengers at JFK faced additional challenges, including ground delays averaging around four hours. Moreover, both JFK and Newark experienced suspended AirTrain services, further complicating transportation logistics. Travelers are encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the most up-to-date information before heading to the airport.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) played a crucial role in maintaining connectivity during the storm. It continued to operate train, subway, and bus services on a weekend schedule. However, alternative transportation modes such as NJ Transit and NYC Ferry were not as fortunate, having to suspend operations until further notice.

As New York City begins to recover from this significant weather event, the impact on travel and logistics serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by severe winter storms. With the reopening of LaGuardia and other major airports, the focus now shifts to restoring normalcy for affected travelers and ensuring that transportation services can handle the backlog created by the storm.
