Lakers’ JJ Redick Demands Improvement in Offensive Execution

He elaborated on his struggles to guide the team effectively from the sidelines, remarking, “I do a lot of joysticking over there on the sideline.”

During a home win against the Memphis Grizzlies on December 29, Redick attempted to call a specific play, known as “Away Toss.” However, the execution fell short as the players failed to position themselves correctly for the play, despite it being called after a deadball situation. “This was after a deadball; it wasn’t like I was calling it on the fly,” Redick noted, emphasizing the need for better alignment and understanding from his players.

The coach pointed out that the Lakers struggled with their plays after timeouts, executing only four out of twelve plays correctly against the Grizzlies. He mentioned that they attempted to run two of the plays again but failed to execute them properly. “Just a lot of slippage with execution,” he added, indicating that the team should be able to transfer their game strategy to the court effectively.

This lack of execution puzzled Redick, who reflected on his own playing career, stating, “I didn’t struggle with remembering plays during my 15-season playing career in the NBA.”

Accountability for the team’s mistakes has also been taken by the players. Forward Jake LaRavia discussed the importance of executing plays, especially after timeouts. “We talked about that in the film room, about ATOs and just kind of like, the execution that we have on them,” he said. LaRavia acknowledged the challenges players face in maintaining focus and organization during games, especially when the opposing team is on offense.
