The local sports scene was energized this week as teams from Astoria, Warrenton, Knappa, and Seaside showcased their talents in basketball and wrestling competitions. The Astoria boys basketball team celebrated a narrow victory, while the wrestling team faced tough opponents in a multi-school meet.

Astoria Boys Basketball Triumphs in Close Match

After experiencing their first loss of the season to The Dalles, the Astoria boys basketball team bounced back with a thrilling victory against Gladstone. The Fishermen edged out the Gladiators with a final score of 55-54, improving their record to 4-1 for the season. Despite their struggles, Gladstone has proven to be a challenging opponent for other teams in the Cowapa League, with St. Helens defeating them by just eight points in both encounters.

The Warrenton boys team had a mixed week, achieving a victory against Faith Bible/Life Christian with a score of 64-53 before suffering a heavy defeat to Ilwaco, losing 75-48. This loss halted Warrenton’s momentum, bringing their record to 4-2. They are scheduled to face Horizon Christian, Tualatin next Monday, followed by participation in the Astoria Vince Dulcich Tournament starting on December 28.

The Knappa boys basketball team saw their four-game winning streak come to an end, falling to Neah-Kah-Nie with a score of 67-42. This defeat dropped their record to 4-2 and they currently hold the No. 17 ranking in the 2A division. The Loggers will return home next Tuesday for a matchup against Country Christian before heading to Pendleton for a series of tournament games.

Seaside and Warrenton Girls Teams Face Challenges

The Seaside girls basketball team encountered another tough opponent, losing to Stayton 66-44. This match was part of a challenging non-league schedule, as the Eagles aim to defend their title as 4A state champions. The Seagulls are also dealing with the absence of senior guard Mya Feeney due to injury. Freshman guard Jahzara Marshall stepped up impressively, scoring 15 of her total 18 points in the first half during their victory over Madras on Thursday, helping the team kick off the Seaside Holiday Classic on a positive note.

Warrenton’s girls team mirrored the boys’ performance, losing to Faith Bible/Life Christian before securing a decisive victory against Ilwaco with a score of 56-30. This win marks a significant improvement for the Lady Warriors, as they have already doubled their win total from last season, now standing at 2-3. They, too, are set to face Horizon Christian/Tualatin before participating in the Vince Dulcich Tournament.

Meanwhile, the Knappa girls basketball team continues to struggle, losing another close match to Neah-Kah-Nie with a final score of 38-35. This defeat leaves them winless in their last four games, all decided by a total of ten points. The team’s only victory this season came against Santiam, and they now hold a record of 1-4. The Loggers will play one final home game against Country Christian before heading to Pendleton for a pair of rematches against Heppner and Weston-McEwen.

Wrestling Update: Astoria Team Faces Tough Competition

On the wrestling front, the Astoria boys team participated in a four-way meet, finishing second overall. The competition included matches against Tillamook, Ilwaco, and Clatskanie. The Fishermen battled hard but were edged out by Tillamook, who secured a 48-30 victory in their first round matchup. Astoria ended the event with a 2-1 record, demonstrating resilience in a competitive field.

As local teams continue their seasons, fans are eager to see how these athletes will adapt and improve in the coming weeks, with key matches and tournaments ahead. The excitement surrounding basketball and wrestling in the region reflects the passion for sports that unites the community.
