Michael Barkann to Share Philadelphia Sports Stories at Rodeph Shalom
Congregation Rodeph Shalom is set to host a special event featuring renowned sportscaster Michael Barkann on November 11. The event will provide attendees with insights into the world of Philadelphia sports, showcasing Barkann’s extensive experience as an anchor for NBC Sports Philadelphia and his role in the Philadelphia sports community.
Barkann, a distinguished member of the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, is well-known for his contributions to local sports media. His career includes hosting postgame shows for the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies, as well as serving as a field reporter during major events such as the Winter Olympics and the U.S. Open Tennis Championships. A seven-time recipient of the title of Philadelphia Sportscaster of the Year, he has also won five Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards.
Dan Stamm, co-chair of the synagogue’s men’s group, the Men of RS, expressed excitement about Barkann’s appearance. He noted, “He’s been the voice of the fan for a long time. He’s done it all and is very involved in the community.” Stamm, who collaborates with Barkann at NBC10 Philadelphia, suggested the event to deepen Barkann’s connections with the local Jewish community.
The congregation anticipates that Barkann will discuss his experiences covering Philadelphia sports over the last three decades. Brad Hyman, the congregation’s cantor, emphasized the importance of Barkann’s values, stating, “Michael embodies a menschlichkeit and spirit of a nice Jewish man within the greater community.” Hyman hopes that the discussion will draw parallels between Jewish culture and the local sports scene.
Stamm also mentioned that the Men of RS group aims to establish a trend of hosting significant events, and this gathering is a step in that direction. Hyman added that Rodeph Shalom frequently invites high-profile speakers, but this event uniquely uses sports as a means of community connection. “Using sports as a great connector is no less important than any other wonderful connectors we employ here at the congregation,” he remarked.
Members of the congregation are expressing enthusiasm about the event, with many indicating they plan to bring family members. “It’s something that they’ll probably remember, like ‘I remember that time I got to see Michael speak and talk sports,’” Stamm said.
The event is open to the broader Philadelphia community and is free of charge. However, organizers require pre-registration to manage attendance for security and refreshment purposes. They have made several hundred slots available, ensuring that space should not be an issue for interested participants.
