The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially announced a verbal agreement to hire Mike McCarthy as their new head coach, a decision confirmed on Saturday. This marks a significant change for the franchise, as McCarthy, a 62-year-old native of Pittsburgh, becomes just the fourth head coach in the team’s history since 1969. His appointment follows the recent announcement by Mike Tomlin that he would step down after a notable 19 seasons leading the team.

McCarthy’s hiring comes just 11 days after Tomlin’s departure, indicating a swift decision by the Steelers’ management. The organization conducted interviews with seven candidates virtually and three in person, including McCarthy. Other candidates for the position included Brian Flores, the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, and Anthony Weaver, the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.

Before this appointment, McCarthy did not coach in 2025 after concluding a five-season tenure with the Dallas Cowboys, where he and the team could not reach a contract extension following the 2024 season. His extensive experience includes leading the Green Bay Packers to victory in the 2010 Super Bowl, a significant achievement that brings championship credentials to Pittsburgh, which has not won a Super Bowl since 2008.

According to sources familiar with the situation, there is optimism that McCarthy’s hiring could influence quarterback Aaron Rodgers to extend his career in Pittsburgh. Rodgers, who spent one season with the Steelers, previously played under McCarthy for 13 seasons in Green Bay, where they secured a Super Bowl title together. Steelers owner Art Rooney II has indicated that Rodgers’ future may have been affected by Tomlin’s exit, stating, “I’m not sure why you waste a year of your life not trying to contend. We’ll try to compete day one if we can.”

Under McCarthy’s leadership, the Steelers aim to position themselves as immediate contenders for the Super Bowl. This move represents a departure from the team’s recent tradition, as their last three head coaches—Tomlin, Bill Cowher, and Chuck Noll—were all under 38 years old and lacked prior NFL head coaching experience. The Steelers’ decision to hire an experienced coach like McCarthy reflects a clear intention to compete at the highest level without delay.
