Robert E. Gordon, a prominent figure in the pest control industry, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 71 while surfing at Bolsa Chica State Beach. His family confirmed the news, noting that he died on a day that was typical for the active Californian who enjoyed outdoor sports and family gatherings.

Born in 1954 in Alhambra, California, Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Jo Ann Gordon, who raised their family in the San Gabriel Valley. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1977, where he was awarded a full scholarship for gymnastics, earning a Bachelor’s degree in business administration. Gordon’s career began alongside his father at the family business, Gordon Termite & Pest Control, which his grandfather, Tony Gordon, established in 1942.

Under Gordon’s leadership, the company became a respected name in the San Gabriel Valley, and he quickly gained recognition as an expert and industry leader within the District-Pest Control Operators of California (PCOC). His commitment to the industry led him to hold several significant positions, culminating in his presidency of PCOC in 1988. Gordon was instrumental in numerous initiatives aimed at improving safety standards across the industry. Most recently, he chaired a committee to review and rewrite the Structural Pest Control Act and its associated rules and regulations.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Cary Gordon, his son Bryan Gordon, and daughter-in-law Tiffany Gordon, along with his grandchildren Ryder, Rexx, and Rio Gordon. He also leaves behind stepchildren Jason Watson and Christina Jackson, and a granddaughter, Nora Jackson. His sister, Jodie Jenkins, and brother-in-law Bob Jenkins are among those mourning his loss.

Throughout his 46-year career, Gordon balanced his professional life with a passion for outdoor activities. He enjoyed biking, fishing, golfing, and surfing, as well as traveling with family. He was particularly devoted to attending his grandchildren’s sports events, where his presence was a source of encouragement and love.

A celebration of life service for Robert Gordon is scheduled for 11:00 AM on January 12, 2026, at Cornerstone Church, located at 1000 N. Studebaker Road, Long Beach, CA 90815. Friends and family are encouraged to honor his memory with flowers or by planting a living memorial. Gordon’s warmth, support, and genuine words of encouragement will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
