Salamanca Celebrates Reopening of Bill Flanigan Memorial Ice Pond

The City of Salamanca is set to celebrate the grand reopening of the Bill Flanigan Memorial Ice Pond on January 26, 2024, from 16:00 to 18:00 local time at 137 Fawn Ave. This event marks the installation of new synthetic ice, which aims to enhance winter recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors.

The reopening celebration is free and open to the public, encouraging families and individuals of all ages to participate. Attendees can look forward to complimentary skating and skate rentals. Additionally, the Salamanca City Central School District food truck will be on site, offering chili and cornbread. To add to the festivities, door prizes will be awarded to one girl and one boy aged 15 and under, with each winner receiving a gift certificate for a pair of ice skates.

Community Impact and Future Plans

Mayor Sandra Magiera expressed pride in the project and acknowledged the collaborative efforts that brought it to fruition. “We are incredibly proud of everyone who played a role in bringing this project to life,” she stated. “What began more than two years ago is a major step forward for our community, and we’re not finished yet.”

The shift to synthetic ice allows for a more reliable skating season, minimizing the impact of unpredictable weather on operations. Mayor Magiera explained that the synthetic surface will reduce delays and closures that have affected the pond in previous winters. Plans for a new warming hut will commence as soon as weather permits, with a full grand opening celebration to follow.

“This project is the result of hard work, patience, and collaboration, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make it happen,” Mayor Magiera added, hinting at more exciting developments in the future for the ice pond and the community.
