Terrell Academy Dominates Lady Panthers with Second-Half Shutout
In a decisive match on January 21, 2026, the Tiftarea Lady Panthers faced a challenging defeat against Terrell Academy, losing 43-19. The game, held in Chula, Georgia, highlighted the Eagles’ impressive second-half performance, allowing them to assert their dominance in the AAA District 3 standings. Terrell Academy improved to a record of 14 wins and 5 losses, maintaining an unbeaten streak of 4-0 in the district, while Tiftarea fell to 7-11 overall, with a 3-1 district record.
Lady Panthers head coach Tay Mallory expressed disappointment with his team’s offensive execution in the second half. “We just came out kind of flat,” Mallory remarked. “We just couldn’t get anything going or put the ball in the hole. I think we could have driven a little bit more. We settled for a lot of jump shots in the second half, and that put a little pressure on us.”
The game commenced as a competitive contest, with Tiftarea initially taking a 5-1 lead. However, early struggles with ball control quickly became evident. The Lady Panthers experienced significant turnover issues, which disrupted their offensive flow. “We just couldn’t get the ball moving how we wanted to move it,” Mallory noted, highlighting the stagnant play that characterized much of the match.
Despite these challenges, Tiftarea managed to maintain a narrow lead, finishing the first quarter at 10-8. However, the momentum shifted as Terrell Academy initiated a 5-0 run early in the second quarter, taking a 13-12 advantage. The two teams entered a defensive stalemate until sophomore McKenna Grace Graham hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer, briefly recapturing the lead for Tiftarea. Yet, Terrell finished the half strong with a 6-1 run, closing out the second quarter at 19-16.
The Eagles maintained their momentum into the third quarter, scoring the first six points to extend their lead. Junior Kate Coogle managed to score for the Lady Panthers with a jump shot, and senior Kate Phillips added a free throw to bring the score to 25-19. Unfortunately for Tiftarea, they would not score again for the remainder of the game. Terrell capped the third quarter with a long-range three-pointer from Sally Master, which shifted the game’s dynamic significantly.
“Against that team, you don’t want to let them shoot the ball from anywhere,” Mallory commented on the impact of Master’s shot. “That’s one of the good and bad things about basketball. If it’s one of your players, it’s a good end. If it’s on the other team, it’s not a good end, but it’s part of basketball.”
The fourth quarter saw Terrell Academy completely dominate, outscoring Tiftarea 15-0. This final stretch underscored the Eagles’ defensive prowess, effectively shutting down any offensive efforts from the Lady Panthers. Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for Tiftarea, particularly Graham, who finished with six points, including two three-pointers. Coogle and Phillips each contributed four points during the contest.
Looking ahead, the Lady Panthers will return to home court on January 22, 2026, for a matchup against Brookwood at 18:15. As they regroup, the focus will be on improving offensive execution and reducing turnovers to regain their competitive edge in future games.
