Tyler Thomas Transfers from South Alabama to Kentucky SEC Team
Tyler Thomas, a former defensive end for the South Alabama Jaguars, has announced his commitment to the University of Kentucky as he transfers via the NCAA transfer portal. The Mobile native previously played two seasons with South Alabama after redshirting at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in 2023.
During his tenure with the Jaguars, Thomas recorded a total of 37 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles, showcasing his impact on the field. As a redshirt sophomore in the upcoming 2025 season, he possesses two years of eligibility remaining, which could be crucial for his development in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Thomas is the second player from South Alabama to join Kentucky through the transfer portal this offseason, following defensive tackle Dominic Wiseman. The two players are part of a wave of departures from South Alabama, as the Thomas twins, including tight end Trent Thomas, were among over two dozen players who entered the portal after the conclusion of the 2025 season.
In total, four former Jaguars have committed to SEC schools, with Wiseman and defensive lineman Achilles Woods also making the transition. Other notable players from South Alabama who have announced their new destinations include wide receiver Jeremy Scott, tight end Brec Long, offensive linemen Asher Hale and Malachi Preciado, defensive linemen Ed Smith, Nate Jennings, and RJ Moss, as well as linebackers Blayne Myrick and Dalton Hughes, cornerback Nehemiah Chandler, and safeties Ty Goodwill and Wesley Miller.
The deadline for college football players to enter the transfer portal was on March 15, 2025. Players who have already entered the portal can select their new teams at any time, which has contributed to a dynamic off-season filled with notable transfers across the NCAA landscape.
As the landscape of college football continues to evolve, the moves made by Thomas and his former teammates exemplify the growing trend of players seeking new opportunities within the SEC, a conference known for its competitive nature and high level of play.
Creg Stephenson, a sports writer for AL.com, has been covering these developments closely, providing insights into the implications for South Alabama and the prospects for the players moving forward. The upcoming season promises to be an exciting one for both Thomas and his new team as he embarks on this new chapter in his athletic career.
