U.S. Achieves Historic Firsts and Records at 2026 Winter Olympics
The 2026 Winter Olympics held in Milan Cortina have witnessed a remarkable array of historic achievements by the United States team. Throughout the Games, numerous records were broken, and several athletes reached significant milestones, highlighting the evolving legacy of American winter sports.
Historic Firsts for Team USA
Among the standout performances, Elana Meyers Taylor made history by becoming the oldest American to win an individual gold medal at the age of 41 in the women’s monobob event. In curling, Rich Ruohonen set a record as the oldest American competitor at 54, participating in a men’s curling match against Switzerland.
In mixed doubles curling, Cory Thiesse secured a silver medal, making her the first American woman to medal in this event, as well as contributing to Team USA’s first mixed doubles curling medal. The women’s freestyle skiing events also saw significant accomplishments, with Jaelin Kauf and Elizabeth Lemley winning silver and bronze in the debut of women’s dual moguls.
The duo further excelled by finishing gold and silver in the women’s individual moguls, marking the first time the United States achieved a first and second place in moguls at a single Olympics.
In ice hockey, Team USA’s women’s squad made headlines by scoring six goals in their quarterfinal game against Italy, extending a streak of scoring at least five goals in each of their first five tournament games. This accomplishment stands as a record for the most consecutive games with five or more goals in USA women’s Olympic history.
Laila Edwards made her mark as the first Black woman to score for Team USA in Olympic history during the match against Canada. This game was also notable for Team USA’s first shutout against Canada and their largest victory margin in Olympic competition.
Record-Breaking Performances
The United States achieved a total of 11 gold medals, surpassing their previous Winter Olympics record. Among the standout performances, Jordan Stolz set an Olympic record in the men’s 500m speedskating event with a time of 33.77 seconds, along with another record of 1:06.28 in the 1000m event.
In figure skating, the ice dance pair of Madison Chock and Evan Bates tied the USA record for the most figure skating medals at the Olympics, bringing their total to three. The women’s ice hockey team recorded five consecutive shutouts, with goalie Aerin Frankel setting the record for the most shutout wins by any woman in a single Olympics, achieving three.
Breezy Johnson captured the first gold medal for Team USA in women’s downhill skiing, marking the narrowest winning margin in the event’s history. The women’s team combined event also saw Jacqueline Wiles and Paula Moltzan win a bronze medal, as this was the event’s debut at the Olympics.
Chloe Kim made history in the women’s halfpipe by becoming the first snowboarder to medal while attempting a three-peat in Olympic history, taking home a silver medal.
These achievements not only showcase the talent and dedication of the athletes but also signify a transformative moment for American winter sports. The 2026 Winter Olympics will be remembered as a pivotal chapter in the ongoing narrative of the United States’ presence in the global sporting arena.
